Extinct Carolina Parakeet... Anniversary (2-21)

A sad anniversary...
http://johnjames.audubon.org/last-carolina-parakeet
The only parrot native to the Eastern USA was the Carolina Parakeet. The last known bird passed away in 1918, on February 21, at the Cincinnati Zoo. His name was "Incas".

This is so sad. Maybe someday they can be “de-extincted” through science.

Re: Extinct Carolina Parakeet... Anniversary (2-21)

It is terrible.
In honor of what we've lost, can I inspire you to save what we can?
Now is a good time to put out nest boxes. Our cavity nesting birds like the northern flicker, American kestrel , blue birds, Chickadees, owls are becoming locally extinct, and over all numbers are dropping by up to 40%!! , just because we don't leave snags and dead trees in our neighborhood. That they need for nest sites, they would happily live in our neighborhoods and raise chicks if they only had a place to do so. I hope you will take action to save the birds we still have.

Terrific idea, we must save what we can in honor of what we neglected.

Re: Extinct Carolina Parakeet... Anniversary (2-21)

Thanks, I thought more bird people would care about our parrot cousins.
Nest boxes are easy and make a big difference. My neighbor stopped me today to thank me for all the bluebirds, she saw 20 in my yard this morning, and she put up a nest box last year. I guess if just one person reading this puts up a nest box it's worth it.

Y'all, thank you so much.
You turned my Debbie-Downer into a... a... an Ursula-Upper?
That's what I call making lemonade out of lemons.

Beautiful!
