unsure of what to do - rant/vent

So today I was laid off for absolutely no reason via text and as far as I can tell they were just saying anything they could as a reason, even if it wasn't true. So if you're looking to adopt from a shop in Colorado the starts with "exotic", don't bother. There's 3 that I'm aware of all under different ownership and they're all bad. Management was awful and work methods were questionable at best but I worked with it because I enjoyed working there and im not good at confrontation.

Anyways I'm out a job and due to my mental health getting a job is no easy feet. I don't know how im going to take care of my birds. I have absolutely no income. I'm sure my parents will help out but that can only last so long. I don't want to rehome them but I'm not sure what else I can do. I'm at a loss and I feel so helpless.

The good news is that employment is at a much higher level than just a few years ago. Most employers are looking for very special people, you know, someone that shows up for work on-time, everyday and works all day without spending half or more of the day on their mobile phones. You will likely be shocked at just how many jobs you are capable of filling and remember, most employers are willing to train you. Basic computer skills, cash register skills, working with the general public, inventory stocking, etc, etc, etc...

If you worked 40 hours per week or even close, apply for unemployment. Even if you are not sure whether you qualify, apply, you just will not know until you do. At the same time, apply to use your State Government job application system. Most States, this all can be completed on-line.

Your new job is getting a job! If you place an equal amount of time into getting a job that you did on this last job. You just maybe shocked at what you find.

I was told a very long time ago that every job you have is all about a resume builder for that next better job.

You just may find that this was that big window that opened when the door closed.

I’m so sorry you’re going through all this. It’s reasonable and OK to feel sad/stressed. I genuinely hope you come across something good and that you’ll be able to keep your birds, animals are part of the family and just the thought of losing them is devastating. I’ll definitely keep you in my prayers.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your job.
I was laid off after 19 years of working for the same company.
I know what it feels like.

I know something better will come out of this.

Sometimes this can happen and it could be the start of a new, exciting and fulfilling career. Take heart and follow your passions - it will serve you the best .

I am disagree on that saying of yours, my Dear. There are many employers hiring disability person like Whole Foods, Fry's, etc... It's against the law if they turn you down because of your disable. I love seeing them placing my groceries in those bags... ^_^

I appreciate it but it's less of them not wanting to hire me and me being emotionally unable to do it. I was able to do this job because it was something i was deeply pationate about

I'm sorry you were laid off, particularly by such impersonal manner.

Echoing what others have suggested, hope you can turn this into a positive. Perhaps you'll bring your talents and passions to another animal care job?

Look up and seek assistance at your nearest library, as far as working on creating and/or updating your resume, taking stock of your employable skills, and obtaining perspective on where you can feasibly find employment given your abilities and personality. Colorado is flush with weed cash at the moment...I am hoping your state has plowed some of the proceeds into creating social resources like what I am describing! GL.

I'm so sorry to hear this bad news, I've been through the same myself and its awful.

I know it isn't much consolation, but when I was laid off from my last job (6 months after buying my first house, 1 month after my husband lost HIS job), I was terrified because there just weren't any places hiring for my skills at that time. I had to take some classes at the nearest community college and ended up changing careers. It actually turned out to the best thing that could have happened to me. My new job is wonderful and I'm so much happier now.

I hope you find a new, better job and find your life is happier for having gone through these difficult times.

Owlet I’m so sorry this has happened to you, I’ve been made redundant twice (maybe again in the next six months or so!) so you have my EVERY sympathy. The very thought of having to apply for work and go to interviews is enough to ratchet my already terrible anxiety levels up into hyperdrive. But despite having completely botched my last job interview with the company I’m with now, to my total astonishment they hired me anyway. Seriously if someone saw fit to hire an old dinosaur/nervous wreck like me, I’m quite sure a young, smart, articulate and good-hearted individual like you will find another job soon. And karma will bite whoever laid you off by sms on the bum some day! (Can I say bum on this forum??)

Sorry you are going through this-
If it helps, there are lots of kids who are a lot like parrots, so maybe your passion could also exist in a tutoring or at-risk/academic field. (?)
The whole thing sucks and is very upsetting (among other adjectives), but, if you like birds, I bet you could find a special connection with certain people--just saying...I am not negating your loss or the stress...Do what you need to do, but when you are ready, if you want, direct your passions to the best of your ability.
It sounds like a very unfair and stressful situation.

+1 there for sure! I’m interning at a mental health clinic that treats children right now, and at least once a day I’m comparing them to my boys or vice versa.

It’s a lot of work, but it’s rewarding!

If it's any helpful to you, I struggle with mental illness and physical illnesses as well. Thankfully, I have a case manager and the place she works at allows me to be visited by other case managers who specialize in helping me find and keep jobs. I struggle with advocating for myself, so they can be a great help, honestly!Also, my case manager loves my pair of singing budgies and she thinks it's adorable when my GCC waddles up and nibbles her toes.

I'm currently unemployed due to my own mental illnesses (and a combination of figuring out wtf is happening with my body), but my grandma supports me. Hopefully your parents can be understanding and helpful until you find a solution!

A few weeks ago I applied for SSI which is basically a disability income, it probably won't be awhile before i heard if I've been confirmed or denied but it's also not uncommon to be denied the first time so we will see :/
My dad talked to me about filing for unemployment but for that we need a letter from me former boss and I really don't think they'd write a letter but my dad says they're required to so I'm not sure. I don't really want any contact with them so we will see.

I've also been talking to my dad about starting up a small business making bird toys and maybe bird food. I would need a freeze dryer though and those are pretty pricey. My dad said he could help me get the material and tools to get started with at least the toys though so I'm excited for that.

I will also look towards maybe applying to a therapy animal program that I could bring to the birds too or something. That could be fun. I love helping people and I love animals. It would be great.


Yesterday I made my first toy with an actual plan. Usually I just throw them together because they're gonna be destroyed anyways, but if I plan to sell them they're gonna need to look nice.

Each State is different regarding what is required to apply for unemployment. That said, you have an email /text that informs you of your end of employment with them and it is dated. And, it includes some reasons as to why. That in and of itself should meet the requirements.

Money is money, and if a little effort on your part is needed, it will be worth your time.

I would imagine having a definitive diagnosis and supporting documents would help. (no need to share here, of course) States and the Feds are notoriously difficult when it comes to disability applications.

Pursuing an animal therapy program seems to be the best of all worlds. I think you'd be terrific!

Yeah I have proper diagnosis and all that, the form was packed full with all my medical history and doctor informations so I'm not too concerned about them not considering me disabled, it's all there.

Today took a turn, I was starting to feel better and move on but now my former employers will not stop texting me despite asking them to cease contact numerous times... as far as I'm aware there's nothing I can do about it either.

It sounds like you have some great ideas and support to move on from it. Good for you, and bravo for being able to talk about your mental health.

Rest assured, no one will judge you here. I don't know or need to know your diagnosis, not my business. In my home growing up, living around mental illness was my "normal" as my mother and brother were both severely affected. My brother still struggles, but is well managed mostly. I don't hold the disability against him, or anyone else. He's a good person. Unfortunately for him, he's never been stable enough to be employable.

Now for your former employer, I don't understand their motivation. They laid you off, and now they won't stop contacting you? Sounds like harassment to me. I suppose you could remind them of that, and maybe block their number on your phone.

Anyway, try to stay strong, and please just know that you have friends here sending prayers, positive thoughts, good vibes, or how ever you like to phrase it. We're here for you.

I have found that simply blocking their phone number on your mobile phone will halt any further phone calls and likely texts. I'll let one of the Tech Heads confirm that. But, it is the number one way I greatly limit Junk phone calls.
