Hi 👋🏻

Just wanted to share we have Barred Owls nesting in our yard. My husband built and hung that nest box 10 years ago. We were beyond thrilled when we saw them this weekend. :D
My first try at video on my Nikon. ☺️

The little one decided to fledge during a downpour.
Momma had been feeding them that squirrel all morning.

Thank you Ladies

It is amazing, I can't get enough. :)

Noodles123, No I didn't see him fly. I missed him leaving the nest box and spotted him when he was already on the ground. I was a nervous wreck, especially b/c of the heavy rain and it was really cold last weekend. I could actually see the little one shaking. :(
He was able to climb up a larger fallen tree limb before we had to leave. The 2nd owlet was still in the nest box. We are heading back up tomorrow night and I'm hoping they are still around. Fingers crossed.

Wow!!! I live in a town/city so I don't have any owls outside.... Few years ago I could watch wild blackbirds nest and their babies from my kitchen window. We did a few photos and one vid but so bad quality (I think they are deleted). But your vids and the photo are great!

Oh! I am beyond jealous! I have loved owls for over fifty years and have put similar boxes up in our old trees in the hope that a little Boobook family might appear there. No luck so far, but I live in hope.

Instead, we have a family of Tawny Frogmouths that have nested in our trees for over fifteen years. They're gorgeous (see pic), but they're not owls. :(

Thank you for sharing your owly family with us! Your photos made my day! :)

Tami, Absolutely amazing !!!
Wonderful video :) You are very lucky to have them nearby.

Kelly has always wanted to capture an owl on the camera but so far, the opportunity has not surfaced.

Looking forward to seeing more :)

Hee! I know, right? They started coming before my (now deceased) little Mum got dementia and she would sit out on the verandah and watch them for hours. (Which is hilarious, because Tawnies are famous for sitting perfectly still and imitating a stick for hours on end). Their nest is just the surface of a large branch and I've watched Mrs Tawny pressing herself desperately to her eggs in rain and wind and storm. I don't know how she does it, but she does! Somehow, she doesn't blow away but most years raises between two and six chicks.

This past year, one of the chicks got separated from Mum'n'Dad and had to sit out a storm at the extreme end of a branch on his own. Just like his Mum, he flattened himself to the branch and hung on by the skin of his beak. How he didn't let go... well, it was a miracle AFAIC. They leave us (presumably to investigate the warmer northern climes) around March and will be back some time in September. I'll tell them you said 'g'day' when I see them! :)

Thank you my friend :)
I was thinking maybe it took so long for them to nest there is b/c we had dogs all our lives. This is the first time we are dog less.

I'm praying they come back next year.

How absolutely beautiful they are! And how great for them that you were considerate enough to provide a safe, warm, dry nest box, Tami2. Small things like this are what save species and help them keep a strong presence in Nature. It's good all round! :)
