Before giving Mishka his dinner, I was sitting in the lounge, chatting to him. I had the balcony door open, very humid today. I smelt something weird, ask my guys what the heck is that smell. Sean thought his laptop was beginning to burn and turned if off immediately (his screen had burnt out previously before, through a short).
Steven was worried it was the ex box, turned if off as well. We walked back into the lounge, I got the fright of my life, Mishka was climbing all over the bars of his cage, the smell was getting to him. We could hardly breath, it was so strong and felt like it was burning our throats. I immediately took Mishka out, placed him in his night cage, and left him in the bathroom, closed the window and the door. We stood on the baloney, there was the most putrid smell, like a chemical or something. I thought it could be someone fumigating their apartment, in the other building.
After about 45 minutes the smell gradually disappeared. I chatted to other tenants, the caretaker as well, they all reckon it was some kind of a chemical.

Mishka eat his dinner, acted normally. I am keeping an eye on him constantly, I know I will not sleep a wink tonight, checking on him constantly.

I thank God, we were home, when this "incident" occurred. Something so unknown to us could have ended the life of Mishka.
OMG I don't even want to go there............

Now I am paranoid to go out, what if the foreign smell re-appears again, and we are not here.................

Wow how scary! Have you talked to management in your building? Someone should be able to tell you what it was you would think!

Wow, Ant...I am so glad nothing happened to our beloved Mishka! Keeping a fid really is like being a parent...always have to be on the lookout for potential danger. Odds are it wouldn't have hurt him seriously, but you never know. Some things are smelly, but not toxic. Better to be safe than sorry...good thinking on the bathroom refuge.

Chris I am at my wits ends........

There is no management in our building, just the caretaker. She mentioned that her dogs began to bark nonstop, when the smell was there. I am surfing the net, at the moment, asking on chatting forums, who we can contact to investigate it further.

Oh no that is really scary! I dont even want to think of what if! :(

Heaven knows when this can happen again because this idiot obviously dont give a damn about what they are doing! Ant you will have to get to the bottom of this otherwise you will not feel safe leaving Mishka alone again.

What about typing a notice with Mishkas picture on it and pushing it under every door? Make a short message that is powerful enough to let these people think twice or at least give you notice BEFORE they do it again.

OMG it's only Thursday...............
I approached a few tenants in the other complex, telling them about the "smell"
and my concern for Mishka. Making pamphlets, will give them out over the weekend, when most people are home. I am sure someone was fumigating, it had that terrible smell, but others say it was a chemical smell.

When they fumigate our offices for roaches then it usually has a chemical smell as well. I cant imagine that they can do that in a flat, there should be laws against it?:(

Ant I would contact you local government office and let them know. As the chemical burned your throat and eyes also.. that would consitute a major health problem for humans and animals.

I have hit a dead end....... Mike........ don't know exactly who to contact.
Phoning a government office here, is an absolute waste of time.
I am going to phone the S.P.C.A. tomorrow, asking advise

No idea on SA laws, but here in the states, the stuff isn't very regulated.

When I was a young turk, I once lived in a very crappy apartment. The whole building was roach infested. The management would "bug bomb" all the time. As tenants, we had no say in the matter. We basically got a note taped to our door basically saying "we're bombing next Tuesday, get out". I would shut off all the filtration on my aquariums, tape plastic wrap over the top, and cross my fingers. God....everyone should be fortunate enough to eventually own a home in their life. It is so nice not having to worry about the downstairs neighbor burning the building down (or killing my pets :().

Sorry to hear about all your troubles with this, Ant. Bug bombs aren't needed if people would take their damned trash out...sorry, it just ticks me off.

Ant I just read this post for the first time and my heart literally sank to the bottom of my gut. I'm really happy Mishka is ok.
