So Bumble and I are about to undertake a HUGE adventure. We're going to Virginia again towards the end of June, but this time for good.

I'm leaving my job of 27 years and the place I've called home for my entire life. BUT I'll be staying with my sister and her family (they have made their home bird-safe in the past and are happy to do so again) and my daughter recently moved from here (Western Washington) to Brooklyn, NY, so it will put me a lot closer to her.

I am excited, sad, terrified, and overwhelmed, but come next month, all of my stuff is going into a U-BOX and Bumble and I will hop into my little car and make our way east!

Quite an upheaval Inger, glad you will have Bumble at your side! I hope the move brings you comfort and happiness.

Hey, why don't you borrow a Boeing 787 from the Everett factory and make it an easy journey? But seriously, have a safe drive!

Oh that’s a great idea. Do you think you can come up here and fly it? I should be able to fit my Fiat in cargo, right? [emoji23]

Check your car for either auto-off or switch-off passenger side front seat air bag shut-off. Bumble in the seat next to you is just safer as it is a quick side check as apposed to looking in the back to assure that all is well. Also, the three point safety belt will work easier.

Pack the U-Box to the top, even if you need a second U-box as a near empty car is much safer and less obvious when traveling. Day stuff in the backseat and overnight stuff and extra travel related stuff in the trunk.

Sorry, old guy stuff. Full maintenance update on the Car. Unless you have newer tires, replace with new, including valves, balance and wheel aliment, oil change with new oil and air filters. and spark plugs. If you have more than 60,000 on the car, consider a trans oil and filter change. Why, cause you will be more comfortable with your car and it will run much better. Don't look for the cheapest deal, look for the highest quality as you will be betting your life on everything working the full distance of the trip. Most people will tell you its a waste of money, which is true right up to you spending three to four days in the middle of nowhere waiting for completion of failure along the way.
Stay-out of Chicago!

Enjoy the trip!

Awwww, thanks for the “Dad lecture.” I just had a full 90k service done last week and tires are fairly new. I’m hiring guys to pack the uboxes, and I’m getting two; they should know how to fill them up good. Since I’m moving in to my sister’s place initially,I will only have clothes, some craft supplies and Bum and her necessities in the car.

I do need to look into airbag shutoff though-you’re right that it will be much easier to have her up front.

Again, thank you for a message that shows your care and concern for us.

So our big adventure is being postponed by at least a year. A few months ago, I noticed a lump on my neck. Didn’t think much of it, had recently been diagnosed with low thyroid so o figured it was related to that. When I saw my doc for bloodwork 2 weeks ago, I pointed it out to him and he said we should have it looked at. COVID is keeping people from unnecessary medical appointments, so I was able to get lots of appointments very quickly. I’ve had an ultrasound, a biopsy, and two appointments with an endocrinologist. Upshot is I have thyroid cancer. As soon as I knew it was a possibility, I asked my boss if I could retract my resignation (I need health insurance) and she said ABSOLUTELY and while she was very sorry this was the reason, she is perfectly happy to have me as long as she can. She relayed all of this information to the Big Boss who said the same.

I’ll meet with the surgeon on Thursday (assuming they can schedule a whole body CT scan prior to that) and probably have surgery to remove my thyroid soon.

The good news is that thyroid cancer has almost a 100% cure rate so I should be around for a long time yet.

Oh my friend, I'm so sorry to hear this! My prayers are positive thoughts are heading your way. At least the prognosis is good. I said it before, and I'll say it again- cancer sucks! Hopefully you have a one and done surgery, and keep on running! I'm all too familiar with the scans. Having been gifted with metastatic melanoma, I've been sliced and diced more than I'd like to think about. Been cancer free for 5 years now, but I get full CT every 6 months, and brain MRI yearly. Actually, my next, and hopefully last scans are this week. If all is good this time, then just regular skin checks. Fingers crossed.

I hope this delay of the grand adventure is only temporary, and everything works out soon. Us east coasters here will be lucky to have you :) Keep us posted, my dear.

Cancer sucks is right. Crossing my fingers that your scans are all clear!!

And yes, the delay is only temporary. I worked out a timeline with the endocrinologist and then padded it with 3 extra months so, assuming all goes well, I’ll be heading East in another year.

I’m so sorry that this is the reason that we west coast peeps get to keep you for another year! Cancer sucks big time, but I’m glad to hear that the prognosis is favorable.

If there’s anything that we can help with - please don’t hesitate to ask. Sending positive vibes for a swift recovery.....

As a native dc suburban Marylander (and therefore obligate despiser of Virginia) I’d be afraid of moving to Virginia, too!

Kidding aside, I certainly wish you safe travels and best of luck in your new endeavors!

Oh Inger I'm so sorry to hear of your diagnosis! Although as you say, thyroid cancer is one of the "easier" ones, if there is such a thing. And thank goodness your boss has been so compassionate! I know someone who went through it and all she has to show for it now is a little scar on her throat, other than that she has made a stunning recovery. I wish the same for you!
