A few days ago I posted about my car accident. Well, I have officially became looking for a new car. My parents are hoping to get $7,000 from insurance for the car, but they think that, realistically, we'll only get about $5,000. They have given me a budget of $10,000 to find a decent SUV with low mileage. I want heated seats and a sunroof, so I haven't been having much luck. I have found a couple that I like, they aren't necessarily SUVs but hey, whatever. A 2010 Subaru Outback is my favorite so far. I also have a Kia Sorento on my list, and a Subaru Forester. There was also a Chevrolet Equinox but it didn't have a sunroof. I have been looking for another Volvo, but I can't find one in my area that is in my price range. I have also considered a Honda, however it didn't have what I was looking for.
To my understanding, my parents will pay for the car, it will be in my name, I will be paying for everything after that.
We are going to rent a vehicle so I can go back to work this weekend, I will have moms car tomorrow, so I'm going to go check out both the Subaru Outback, and Forester since they are at the same place.
I don't know when we'll be able to actually buy my new car, but hey that doesn't mean I can't go take a look at it in person.

Sad time to be looking for a used SUV or any car as the market pricing is up extensively over just a couple of months ago. Well, the new market is not much better as most plants are not fully up and running.

Best of luck in your search. Since price is going to be an issue, consider a two or four door car as that market is a bit more reasonable, and less expensive to operate.

I'm not getting a small car. An suv or crossover would do, the larger the car the safer it is.

Can't go wrong with a Subaru..That,s why they remain pricey, even used. Just a FYI..if you decide on a Subaru, ask if the head gaskets have been replaced. My son is a mechanic and also has had a couple. He says even the manufacturer lists replacing head gaskets at 75k miles.

I have almost nothing bad to say about the Subarus. Given the choice, the outback would be closer to what you're used to. It's a longer wheelbase than the Forrester, and a little bigger overall. Both are amazing for winter time here in Maine, however, sorry, they aren't going to feel like your Volvo. I have an 05 outback that I drove for ten years before passing it down to my son. He's finally retiring it this week at 235,000 miles.

The only thing against the Subarus, is the head gaskets. They commonly need to be replaced at 80-100k miles. It's a fairly expensive job if done properly. I've had them done twice on mine, at 105k and 186k. For a used one, make sure they're already done, or you're nowhere near the mileage that you'll need it. It's a well known Subaru thing. Be wary of anyone who tells you otherwise. It's not an if, it's a when. Don't know about some kind of warranty that would cover it, but worth looking into in advance. No, I don't sell extended warranties- I hate that whole industry. I just know a fair number of Subaru folks, and my trusted mechanic friend will tell you, "it's a thing."

In spite of that issue, I would have another one in a heartbeat. Solid, safe, good handling, and amazing in the snow. Sadly, I really need my truck to haul my other son with his various racing wheelchairs and gear.

Best of luck in your search. Hope you find just what you're looking for!

Interesting, as I said nothing about a 'small car'.
With your demands, you may need to ask you parents for an addition 4 to 5 thousand to add to their already generous offering. Low milage, midsize, SUV /Crossovers are in heavy demand...

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Glad you are preparing for and researching a replacement vehicle! SUVs are outside of my experience but I'd refer you to Consumer Reports for reliable information. Judging by your location, AWD and heated seats a must. (might even find something with heated steering wheel!)

Either you or your parents ought check on fair market value of your prior vehicle. Insurance company will attempt settlement on the low side, so several comps may prove helpful during negotiation. The whole point being to both relieve your parents of deeper assistance and getting the "most" car from an unfortunate experience.

Other advice notwithstanding, my son has had 2 Outbacks. One he did crash so no fault of the car, but the other literally fell apart, wheel assmebly came off at 46 mph ( fixed) and the brake system failed, fixed, and now the tranny is shot. Toyal miles he had it < 40K.
Want it for parts? Free !!

You said a 2 or 4 door car, I just assumed you were talking about a 'small car'
They said that if I chose a car over the budget they will pay the $10,000 up front and just have me pay it off in monthly installments afterwards.

Two items. With insurance, there are two valuations, book and replacement value! That can possibly help with an extra 1-2k!
The other, a sunroof. Many want, few use!

My last car was a 2008 Nissan Altima SL 3.5 270h.p. v-6, fully loaded (leather, heated seats, power everything,6 c.d. Bose stereo..sun roof.( I used that ALOT :04:).just didn't have the in-dash screen/back-up camera. I bought it used in 2011 with less than 50k on the clock for a "little" over 20k  Besides one set of tires and brakes ( the dealer put new tires/brakes when I purchased it) I replaced the altenator..half the front end had to come apart to get at the dang thing
I put 100k on that car before a deer crossed my path and I swerved to the right, went off the road into a ditch with a ton of brush. Even though there was minimal body damage, the under carriage was trashed and the Green Lizard totaled it. They gave me $6,800 for it.
Now I have a 2010 ford fusion SEL also fully loaded ( no b/u camera) Nice car but not as sweet as the altima!

I'm so sorry you were in an accident!!

That being said, my husband still drives his 2002 Subaru WRX wagon at about 220k miles and he'll keep driving it until it goes out. The ride isn't as smooth as a Volvo would be, but it will be more reliable, safer and will outlast almost anything on the market.

Hope you can find something!

I went to take a look at the Subaru Outback today. It's not for sale yet, so maybe no one else will buy it before we get the money. The color of it remains me of our previous suburban.
I am now dead set on getting this car.
