I have the deepest respect for elephants and we always encounter hundreds of them in the roads. You have to learn their language before you dare visiting any National Park who have African elephants. On our last trip, well actually every trip, we found a lone bull that walked in the road and approached our car. The only thing that you can do is to start reversing even if it means that you have to reverse forever then so be it.:D

Unfortunately this elderly couple did not know the rules of the bush or maybe thought they knew better - dont know?

The elephant approached the car and Riaan van Wyk, the person who took the photos, started reversing. The couple decided that they were not going to wait for the elephant and passed Riaan's reversing car and tried to pass the elephant..... Well the photos will explain the rest.

The couple survived and were extremely lucky because the elephant was only playing. I believe they learned their lesson.

Oh my goodness......

I would not go to somewhere like this without learning what to do in such instances!!! I would not know what to do, but I do not drive in the wild with such magnificent creatures!

How very fortunate they were!

I have to say though, he is GORGEOUS lol!

The best is that it was a South African couple who has visited the park plenty of times. Believe me Von, the tourists usually turn around so fast you just see dust and they are gone.:D

The photo in my avator was from one of those ellies who DID NOT WANT to leave the road and we reversed until we could not any more because we got blocked by ellies behind us. It was a very scary day - a real adrenalin rush!:D

The closest encounter that we've ever had was when we came around a sharp bend and there was a whole family with tiny babies in the road! We got chased that day by more than one and the faster we drove the worse it got because the ones next to the road in the bushes also got a fright and started chasing us. I will never forget that day!:D I can almost taste the adrenalin from only telling you!

The thing is the bush are sooooo thick that you honestly do not see them until they are right on top of you! But the couple from the photos had no excuse because this ellie was minding his own business in the road.

The elephant from the pictures are really a magnificent beauty.

Wow! I can't imagine the kind of wildlife you have there. I've seen elk and moose when I was growing up, and we saw a black bear mother with a cub one time when we were in North Carolina. Wildlife from Africa, Asia and Austrilia have such a mystique to me.

An update on the story.

The couple in the car was John Somers and his 'girlfriend' and it was his 66th birthday. Wife was at work? Oom John came around the bend and saw the reversing vehicle, the occupant - Riaan van Wyk stopped next to them and warned them about the elephant. Unfortunately Oom John is Irish and did not understand Afrikaans but decided to also reverse.

He did not watch where he was going and reversed into the bush. Before he could try and turn around the elephant was on them.

I am just glad that they are ok and sorry about his 2 week old car.;)

The elephants name is Amarula.

I think Oom Somers had more trouble at home than what he received from the ellie because they had to phone the wife to come pick them up! :p
