I am really interested in toucans and was wondering if anyone knows about availability. They are really interesting, who has experience with them? :blue1:

There was a guy here in PA who had a store and had a few of them. They were just way too expensive and their specialized care seemed like it can be pretty difficult to keep them. What is the conservation status of toucans anyway?

I don't know if it's a normal part of their diet or if this guy didn't really know what he was doing but I know he fed his live chicks at least on occasion :/

I am currently parrotless but hope to be owned by a parrot in the next few months. :-)
I have been looking into Toucan care as I would like to own 1 one day.

As already stated Emerald Bird Gardens is a great place to get a Toucan. If you want one of the larger Toucans and not a toucanet you should expect to pay upwards of $5,000.00.

Toucans have very specific diet requirements. They need a fruit based diet low on iron. You would also need to feed them special pellets that are low on iron. Some pet Toucans suffer from Iron Storage Disease. This is something you should research before owning a toucan so that you can make sure you don't kill your bird by providing it an improper diet.

If you are looking for information on parrot care I would first read everything on the emerald bird forest garden's website.

In regards to Toucans eating meat. Toucans in the wild eat lizards and small birds. So while it is ok for them to eat these types of things it isn't a common food given to pet toucans.

To add more of what HumanWings said,

Toucans must get extremely low iron levels in their diet. Giving a healthy tea also helps to cleanse there system. Without these careful measures many toucans die before they reach 10 years old.
