A friend called me tonight about an Owl he has rescued from a construction job he's on. I used to have a Wildlife Rehab Permit, and Owls were my favorite Wild Birds. I had several of different species: Great Horned, Barn, Saw Whet, Barred, and an Elf. My favorite was my Elf. She, and a few others, were not able to be released. All others were fixed up and put back in the wild. I am anxious to see this bird. Though, I've warned him it is illegal to keep it. I'll assess the situation tomorrow, and we'll contact the proper authorities. I'll update tomorrow, when I know more.

It was a young Screech Owl. I love the clucking/clicking sounds they make when scared. After looking it over very carefully, we decided nothing was wrong with him except being scared. So we brought him back to near where my friend found him, and set him free. He flew quickly & easily away. I'm sure he was hungry. But, none the worse for wear. Happy ending!

Several years ago, screech owls nested in the palm tree across the street, and I just happened to notice them early one evening. We sat in lawn chairs and watched their first solo flights. It was marvelous; and then they were gone.

I interned as a wildlife rehabber at a raptor center one summer. Owls are by far my favorites as well! I've been lucky enough to work with a number of glove-trained owls too (unreleasable for various reasons; usually eye problems). I'm glad to hear the little guy turned out to be alright!
