I need some gouldian finch advice along with society finches.

my gouldian pair are now nesting and tossing their chicks :(, I have a society pair of finches who have 2 babies with them but have fledged already.

here are my questions:

should I put the gouldian nesting box in the society cage with ONLY the female society finch?
will she go in the box?
OR:

should I remove the eggs from the gouldian nesting box and transfer them into her nest?

I'm planning to remove the male society finch along with the two babies.

any quick answers will be much appreciated!!!!:52:

well, being the impatient and impulsive person I tend to be,....sorry, I just couldn't wait!!
I decided to remove the gouldian nesting box from their cage, before they tossed another chick. I would do anything to prevent that from happening.

I removed the box, and low and behold I have a hatchling and 2 eggs!!!

I gently took the baby and eggs and placed them into the society finch nest.

returned it to her cage(only her) and placed her right into the nest so she would be aware of the newest additions....gosh I sure hope I did the right thing.

I just love birds never a dull moment :)

I think you did the right thing. I've experience with Zebras breeding, but know little about Gouldians and tossed chicks. The Societys are excellent foster parents so all should be fine. Keep us posted!

well, the hen has not gone into the nest, I'm worried the baby will die due to not being kept warm, I'm very conflicted with pulling the baby and eggs to set up a brooder.

I can feed them very 2 hours(not that I want to), but would....but can't do it thru the night, I don't know if I should wait or remove them, what to do?????

I have heard of having to foster certain finch species under other parents, as some supposedly make terrible parents! And others make excellent parents! So I hope it all works out for the best!

my intention after reading the link you sent me was to pull the baby and eggs. I went in the bird room and she flew into the nest. I stood their for a moment to see what she would do, and she stayed there, standing inside the nest, not sitting. This is so frustrating!
If I didn't pull the babies from the gouldian box, they more than likely would have been tossed. one had already.
now that I've transfered the baby and eggs, she's NOT going in the nest.
I don't know whether to leave it alone and let nature take it's course, or try and rescue the little one, and the eggs.
I think I'm caught in between a rock and hard place.
I know how to hand feed and have pipettes, and the proper formula for finches. I just don't know what to do, wait or act????

feeding babies that are 2-3 weeks is what I do, but when they are very very tiny and just days old, I don't know if I'm qualified enough.....I really hate this indecisiveness, especially when there is a life at stake :(

update~~ I decided to pull the baby from the society finch nest as she kept leaving it and not nesting.

my daughter and I are now looking after this wee one, we have fed it, and have it set up in a 'brooder' of sorts. I have it set for around 86-90 degrees, if anyone could tell me the precise tempt that would really help me out!

please wish me luck with this wee one, I was shocked that he was still alive, he hadn't had any body warmth for over 4 hours, let alone any food....

Little peeps this morning!!, I'm over the moon right now, bless his little heart. He's a tough little one, the last feeding before bed was 11:00 pm, I woke up around 7, went over to check on him, and here I see his little head, mouth wide open, turning from side to side.
oh my goodness, you could not have given me a better start to any day. :) :)

btw, happy new year everyone!

During anytime you breed you should always have a backup plan/pair that can act like foster parents. I have a pair that lays infertile eggs but are extremely good parents as I tested them with a new hatchling and they did great. I have a pair that's horrible parents as they kill their chicks after certain age so I give their chicks to the good pair and they raised them great. Just always remember to let them nest during the same period then you can do the switch.

Mikey- I did have a back up plan :)...not sure if you read all the posts, but my society pair which normally foster, didn't this time for some reason. Could part of the problem have been she is still focused on her own babies even though they have fledged?

I had put them in a separate cage (the 2 babies and dad) as he was constantly plucking her and she was almost to the point where she was almost bald. that is why I separated them, I don't think she could have taken much more.

New development!.. .now I have 2 babies, this newest one that was tossed from the nest is a star finch baby. I placed it back in the nest, and within 2 minutes she tossed it again....so now my little baby gouldian has a friend. I am praying that these two make it.

I did read that and I put in my post to let them nest during the same time. The fosters would ignore any new comers usually if they're not on any eggs at the time.

live and learn... I was always led to believe they will foster under any condition, guess I was mis informed, thanks for the info.
Any suggestions for feeding these two wee ones?
not sure if anyone has experience feeding baby finches just days old.

Regular handfeeding formulas will work but its a tough job as you mix the formula on the watery side and feed it slow. Good luck!!!

I'm not sure at this point whether I keep them tame or put them back. I'm trying not to get ahead of myself with them. My daughter named the gouldian baby Zoey.

I'll take some pics today and post them.

MikeyTN-thanks again, I'm using Lefebres hand feeding formula, which is ideal for finches as it is rice based, not corn based.
I read a very good article that corn based formula is not recommended for finches, it's meant for parrots.
