Okay, the shop where I got Sammie has a gorgeous 1.5 year old derbyan hen. She's very sweet and a little shy (like a lot of ringnecks) Her brother sold pretty quickly, but she's been in the shop about a year. I guess most people interested in the species want males. I'm guessing for the pretty orange beak.

Anyway, they've dropped the price for her to $300, which is excellent for a derbyan and I'd take her in a heartbeat if I had the space/time/money. Unfortunately, right now I don't have any of these things. I know the shop treats their birds well, but of course they don't get the attention and time out they could with a real owner and it's driving me crazy because I know she has the potential to be an excellent pet.

Not sure why I wrote all that, except maybe to express my frustration and in case anyone in the Houston area is looking for a derbyan I can help! LOL

I can understand the frustration. There's a local pet store here that likes to bring in the occasional rare birds (at least rare to this area), and sometimes they sell quickly, other times they'll sit there for months on end or get transferred to another store.

This store also has a derby, and they want $800 for "him" but he (I do believe it's female! but it's been a while since I've visited so could be mistaken!) is very destructive. He's chewed through his perches and destroys toys that they give him... so now he has a pvc perch and crappy toys.... he's very talkative but not friendly with strangers and it's a somewhat small cage as well. I feel sorry for the guy.
