She laid it under the newspaper that sits on the grate. So In other words, she maid a tent with newspapers, a d laid the egg.on the grate. They have a nestbox as well as a plastic box with aspen shavings in their large cage. Should I move the egg or leave it? I put a small washcloth under the egg but then realized I shouldn't use a towel like material. Thoughts? Thanks

My linnies laid 7 eggs. They tossed 4 and I threw them away. They kept the last 3.

Not sure what the best thing is to do, but if they aren't going into the nest box then moving it won't help.

Yes, that is what I thought. She doesn't have any interest in the nestbox or the other area I made for her with shavings in a small box so I think I will leave it and see what happens. I had a bonded pair of Burkes years ago that used the next box beautifully. This little one has a different plan I guess! ; )

she has no interest in the egg, if she did she would be sitting or guarding it

I would remove it, you could add another nesting box and see if they prefer that one instead.

She is sitting on it and guarding it, I just hate for her to be under the newspaper sitting on the grate. Do you think I could move it to the nest box and try to put her in too? In hopes that she lays her others there?

Of that's where she wants to lay let her be. Even if you put her in the nest box with the egg she's not gonna go into it if she haven't already. Sometimes they will use it the moment nest box is given.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking, I'd better leave h r alone. Only other thing II could do is take the grate out and line the bottom under the paper with a soft cloth. Might try that.

Does she have a mate??? There's something you could do is by adding a small paper box with the top cut off so it's about half a inch tall on the sides. Then put some bedding within then place it at the place where she's laying then place the egg within.

Yes Mikey, she has a mate, he is a DNA'd male. They are bonded. You had a great idea, that might work too, although I will have to lay paper over it because she loves to be under that newspaper. I ended up taking out her grate last night, laying a cushy towel across the whole bottom of the cage with a soft, smooth sheet over it. I then put my normal newspaper down with egg sitting on the cushy sheet. They both are going under and she is still sitting so we will see what happens. Another egg is due tomorrow. Thanks for all your input!

One thing I want to mention is if you have no experience in hand feeding. Learn it now! Read and learn all you can, be prepared and don't wait until last minute. If all becomes too much of a hassel then separate them for good and don't let them breed.

Good advice Mikey, yes I have hand fed many Bourkes babies and am a licensed wildlife rehabilitator as well. I have done numerous species, although I know the Linnies needs are a bit different, more like the Bourkes. I may just let her feed them and co-parent. Another egg is due tomorrow. I appreciate your insight!

Oh how neat! Did you do wildlife too? We must love animals! Right now I have about 23 eastern cottontails that I am tubing, as well as 3 fox squirrels. A beautiful red fox pup just came in too. I also love the birds of prey. They are my favorite and so beautiful. Birds are just beginning to come into the rehab center now. I've had about 4 clutches of Bourkes but that's as far as it went with breeding. Those went smoothly but I'm definitely not as experienced in breeding like you! I wasnt really planning to breed these 2 linnies, thought if I didn't introduce a nest box that it prob wouldn't happen. I guess they had their own ideas of what would happen but I'm fine with that. I don't know that I will plan on babies in the future as I hate to worry about finding good homes. I have a friend and a few family members who will take the Linnies if any should hatch. We shall see! ; )

I did rehabilitation with wild birds! Birds have always been what I love and cherish. Unfortunately I have to watch what I do now days due to my own flock and my health. I have poor health so one bite or scratch could send me to ER so I can't do wild animals. I even have to watch for the cats I've rescued.

That is neat! I know what you mean about being careful, I have gone more toward mammals these last few years due to having my flock of parrots. I'm sure you were great at it too. Stay healthy! ; )
