Someone offered me a ringneck dove to adopt, but I wasn't planning on it. I read about them online, but there is not too much about what kinda pets they make.
Does anyone have them? What kinda pets they make? Are they smart? :) Cuddly? :) How do they fly - just around the house or outside? Can they be recall trained?

Just any ideas welcome! I have one day to decide - I'm getting a lovebird from that lady on Sat, and have to decide tomorrow. I do have a spare large cage, so that's not a problem.
Sorry, that's not a parrot forum topic, but I know people here own all sorts of birds.
Thank you!!

Never owned one but have seen them around. Doves can be trained! Make sure you understand they will coo constantly even when your trying to sleep in the middle of the night. I rehab a Mourning Dove once but she had a lot of issues as she can never grow back her wing feathers as every day when I visit her in her pen she'll flop around like mad and break off any new feather growth. I didn't put her in a cage because of that so in my basement area I setup a wire pen that's pretty large. But she still manage to break blood feathers and splatter everywhere....I visit her once a day to give her fresh water and food due to that issue.

If you look at magicians who owns white doves, they have them trained quite well.

Cooing in the middle of the night?! Ugh. Cooing in the daytime would drive me nuts in the house I think lol! They're cute birds though I know nothing about them. I don't even know what doves eat.

There's Dove mix! Mainly small seeds and such like parakeet/finch seed mix. A friend of mine used to work for a magician and he told me the cooing part drove him nuts at night.....lol

So do they coo in their sleep since they're diurnal? The tiny Diamond Doves are adorable.

I have to wear earplugs to bed anyway, since I wake up extremely easily with noises. I will wake up if I hear a feather drop! I'm cursed with that, I hate it lol.

I'm partially deaf so I lay on my left side(the good side) to sleep cause I'm easily awakened by noises as well. The cooing of the dove would drive me insane, same with pigeons. The Dove I was rehabilitating was two floors under so I can't hear a thing....lol

Oh I see… Thank you so much! I have a very light sleep and insomnia problems, so I guess someone who coos at night or whole day is not an option for me. We have one story house with no basement, and there is no place to hide from that. :) My gcc is very quiet and never bothers me. I don't mind chirping or cooing, but not 24/7. LOL

My ringneck is 18...had him since he was a fledgling. Only males coo, and he only does it occasionally and never at night...he's asleep! He's very sweet, but different than a parrot. They don't really play, but they can learn to like being petted and snuggled. Mine is bonded to a cockatiel and they keep trying to make babies... but its not really working out for them. :)

Doves are very quiet and easy, if a bit dusty. They need grit, unlike parrots. All in all, he's been a great buddy.

We owned a ringneck when I was pretty young, but she wasn't really trained. We let her fly around the house and she liked to be petted, but she wasn't as social as a parrot. Also, I'm certain they can be trained if you put a little effort into it. As for the cooing, she didn't coo at night, only during the day. She did coo a lot during the day, but it never bothered me since it's a soft sound. Nice pets, but not as interactive as a parrot.
