We added a pigeon to our flock (at least temporarily) last week. He is such a cool guy, and will step up and fly to us when we call him. He is so excited to see us that he quivers all over.
I named him Cooper (I am all about puns!). He coos, and should be in a coop, so Cooper seemed like a great choice. He was being given away free, and was living in a tiny dog kennel, so I just had to bring him home.

So yesterday I went in a little later to let Cooper out of his cage. I opened the door and called to him, holding my arm out. He flew over my arm and onto the floor (he has always flown to a cage top before this).
I hold my arm out and say Come here Cooper and he goes into attack mode and starts pecking the crap out of my toes and feet and even ankles! It hurt like crazy, he was like an insane jackhammer! I had no shoes or even pants on, just my night shirt and I am dancing trying to avoid his beak.
I grab a towel and get it in between us and he is charging the towel and i feel like a dang bullfighter or something. I had to get his food and water out of his cage and onto the floor so he could eat while he was out, so I am balancing a wooden shelf on my left knee and trying to hold the towel with my left hand as I get the water and food out of his cage.
I finally accomplish this, and then have to try to back out of the room still holding the towel between us. He is actually growling at me and it's like a scene from "The Birds".

I know it sounds ridiculous but he scared me more than any of our parrots ever have. I was shaking like a leaf when I finally got upstairs!
And now, he has been renamed...his new name?
Coojo.

OMG I so love the part about his new name Coojo! :18:

How scary! Who knew... it's not just birds that can bite hard that can hurt you! I hope you don't have any little peck mark bruises now!

COOJO! Aptly named....

Ugh.
Pigeons and I don't get along... Only because I have about 300 in my barn and they spook my already highly strung race horses...

Will you be keeping coojo?

I'm not sure yet whether he will stay with us. I think he may be happier with someone who has other pigeons, but if I can't find the perfect home he will probably stay right here:) But that would mean I need to add another pigeon so he isn't alone...if I add another, I would have to name him Stephen..after our own dear mod and also Stephen King:)

Christine, I have to say I also had a good laugh about it once I was safely out of the room:)

Karen, I'll make you a deal...you come for a visit and I promise to take video of you in the lion's den...er, I mean pigeon's den.

You know, my wife and I almost broke down and took this cute brown very nice natured pigeon home a couple weeks back. We stopped by today at the Parrot store/rescue and he was homed.
The new owner just happened to be there at same time picking up some food for the new pigeon when she told us the pigeon chased her dogs around pecking at them then went for 2 of the parrots she owned.
Never had a pigeon, but my wife was considering it at the time. Guess maybe it was good we waited. Seemed like such a nice bird though.

If we can't have a video, how about some pictures of your possessed pigeon? :D

I'm dying laughing over here! Coojo, what a name for a serious character. I hope he calms down a bit and there are no more repeats of your first interaction with him:) You have to wonder if thats why he was bing rehomed? I bet though he would respond to training. Pigeons may have a bad reputation as pests, but they are pretty smart, and I bet Coojo is capable of learning!

Coojo! Lol!

As for the prospective name of your hypothetical 2nd pigeon, I know enough of your deep love for Stephen King to realize any resemblance to my own name would be merely and purely a fortuitous coincidence. Lol!

Hmmm...sounds like the pigeons could be starting their Take Over The World plot! I never realized they could be so aggressive!

My hubby is trying to work more with him...Coojo attacked him last night too so now it isn't quite as funny as when it was just me:) He will fly to us when we call, and step off when we tell him, so I know he's smart. Now just to figure out why he is attacking.
This morning I actually put on a hoodie with the hood over my head to feed him..lol.

I think the 2nd pigeon will remain hypothetical for now, I'm afraid he would kill one:( But trust me, my dear, my hypothetical pigeon is definitely named after you:)

Update on Coojo:) I found someone who has an acreage and one lonely pigeon. He will be outside in a coop, and once he gets used to his new home, he will be able to fly free from the coop when he wants to with the other one. I am so excited for him, I think he will be so much happier there with a friend of his own kind. If it doesn't work out, he comes back to me, so a win win:)
Fingers crossed he is nicer to a buddy than he is with us..lol.

LOL...I know, right Wendy?
A friend jokingly said I shouldn't tell them he can be mean, I said his name is Coojo??? You don''t think they would figure it out even if I didn't say anything? For the record, I did tell them and they are willing to try him anyway:)

Great to hear! :) They just have to keep the name Coojo lol. So about being able to fly free where he's going, how does that work? I really don't know anything about birds other than parrots and finches, so you'll have to excuse my ignorance on Pigeon behavior . Do they just naturally return to where their home is? Sort of like cats :18:

Karen, I am still laughing at that...shhhh, don't say it too loud:)

Julie, they do return to their homes. There is some evidence that they navigate using the Earth's magnetic field, others think it is by sound and sight, using roads, landmarks, etc. It is quite cool, however they figure it out:)
With my luck he will find his way back here..lol
