Hi all so little pheonix is 9 weeks today and flying really well
Problem is since he realised his flight ability he simply wants to fly off onto mikkis play tree and bully mikki. Or even just be on it if mikkis not there

He is also getting rather nippy and bossy

I know this is likely to be his bluffing stage and am doing my best to ignore his bites sometimes he just does it for no damn reason

Anyways is it to early in his development to be clipping him
yet or is it ok since he knows how to fly already ?

Should I clip a few each day for a week or so or all at once I don't want any crash landings ?

How can I tell when the feather is fully grown as to not cut a blood feather ?

Sorry so many questions just want to get things right

I should take him to the avian vet who can show you how to do it properly. I have pored over diagrams but I still feel in practice, it's very difficult to do smoothly.

A lot of damage can be done with clipping and I have been present at 3 professional wing clippings in my life.

I STILL wouldn't feel comfy doing it. 6months will feel a long time for a bird before any man made defects are ironed out.

Tony. OWA gone but never forgotten..

I only had my amazons wigs clipped once by a vet and will never do it again. The so called vet took too much of and when i let tony out of his cage next morning he tried to fly across the room and crashed onto the floor and knocked himself unconsious i nearly cried with fear when he lay there not moving so since then wing clipping wont be done in my house. Just my personnel choice.. george.

I have wing clipped many times before thanks for the concern though
The pet shop I worked in sent us to get training by the avian vet so that we could do it in our shop for people wanting it done

I'm just not sure if he's to young still and if I should do a few at a time so he gets less and less flight over a few days or should I do it all at once ?

See siggie :)
I would not clip at this age! Marigold was clipped too early I believe and it has taken me a whole year to get her to fly confidently and she is still a bit unsure. At this age, Phoenix has not fully developed his chest and wing muscles. I clipped my budgies at three months old- they start flying at 4-5 weeks.

It's a good idea if you can get wings & talons clipped at the same time. With Zoey, I don't clip her myself, but act as an assistant to my friend, who's had several greys thru the years
My job is to distract Zoey, while the clipping is being done on other side of a towel.

If you are going to have them clipped, please take the bird to a avian vet. They are trained in this field.
They can give you valuable in sight, into the clipping of wings, the pro's and cons, and at what age.
It can be a very traumatic experience for the bird, if not handled properly.
