Found a kakariki...

My mum is an assistant principle, and some kids at school today brought her a bird that was having trouble walking and flying. She brought it home to me to look after and we've determined it is a Kakariki. Can't tell if it is wild or a lost pet. It's quite terrified, but will let us handle it and was perching comfortably on children's fingers. He/she seems exhausted - keeps looking like he is about to fall asleep but is keeping himself awake out of fear. He's had some water and a tiny bit of apple and seems to be walking, perching and flying okay now. I think we should take him to the vet who can then turn him over to a wildlife sanctuary, but mum has suggested I keep him... Not sure what to do. We're thinking he was suffering heat exhaustion/dehydration, because he seems okay now and it is a very hot day and according to the internet Kakariki's are prone to heat exhaustion.

Contact all vets , rescues and such like in your area a wild bird like that wouldn't suffer from heat exhaustion as they have the sense to stay in shade etc
it's likely he is someones pet and hoefully they miss him and haven't let him go

Yeah, when mum gets home from visiting my grandpa in hospital we'll take him to a vet. Hopefully someone will claim him, if not I'm sure a wildlife sanctuary will offer him a good home.

He's a pet. Kakariki's aren't native and somebody will be missing him heaps. I know how I felt when I lost my cockatiel .

Aren't they native? I found out what kind of bird he was by looking up Australian native birds...

Took the bird to the local vet and they're going to get a carer to take it either tonight or tomorrow.

Someone offered me a Kakariki in my search for Cal. Sweet little birds. I read a bit about them and apparently, they need interaction everyday (like them all, obv!!!) but if not, they can quickly revert back to being frightened and unso******ed.

I just looked it up cause I've never heard or seen of this type of parrot and it said that its also known as the New Zealand parakeet and is native to New Zealand hence the also known as name lol

No matter where he actually should come from. He must have been a pet because a wild bird will NEVER sit on anyone's finger.

I pray his owner finds him.
