Hey guys,

Who wants to come along as we hatch out a couple of incubators' worth of barnyard eggs brought back from my Aunt's farm? We have barnyard mix chicken eggs (roo has blue egg gene, also may be a few pures from a second roo in the flock), mixed variety guinea keet eggs, and, my precious ones: 5 duck eggs who may have been fathered by a duck who started life in my home as a much loved housepet but had to be rehomed when we moved to the city. He has lived on her farm for over 2 years now, they love him and he is happy there. We all agree he stays with them, but my man and I want some of his babies in our poultry flock. Ducks will be kacki cambell, indian runner hens crossed with either kacki cambell or rouen(my boy) drakes. 5 eggs and G is older and more in charge than the other drake, I think chances are good for at least one grand duckbaby. :)

Also, have begun the process of buying our farmland and are going to look at properties in the next few weeks when my man can get off work for a few days to drive the 8ish hours to see it. The land looks perfect, cross fingers and toes for us please!

I candled the eggs today and the chicken eggs whos shells can be seen through have obvious vein growth and chick starts. Whoo! The ducks may have veins, but it is hard to tell. They incubate a good 2 weeks longer than chickens, so it is still early to tell for them. Guineas incubate a week longer than chickens, are smaller eggs, and are brown shelled. Not a good combo for candling, so I'll give it time and candle again in a few days to a week or so. :)

Setting up a second incubator now that I just bought. It is called "automatic" but does not turn the eggs (grr.), so it really is just a forced air incubator but oh well. Going to set another 7 chicken eggs bringing the total to (I think): 19 chicken eggs, 19 guinea eggs, 5 duck eggs.

Gosh I hope they don't all hatch (but I also sort of do because that would be adorable as heck).

I've incubated a couple species of quail eggs before with success, raised 1 duck as a housepet from 9 days old, and raised 9 chickens to freezer age from about a week old. Never had guineas or incubated either other type of egg. Very exciting stuff!

Sadly the egg with twins did not make it. Luckily I pulled the egg today when I noticed a bad smell and a bit of fluid coming from one of the pores... the egg exploded in my hand. Luckily not in the incubator tho, and it didn't take any other eggs with it. Of the other chicken eggs whos shells can be seen thru 1 is clear (infertile) and one hasn't grown in about a week (early quitter). They were not bad tho so I left them in the incubator for now, and the rest are growing on track that I can see. Some have shells that cannot be seen through though, so no way to tell with those ones.

The duck eggs you can see movement in each of. The guineas I have not really tried to candle, but when I do with one or two, they seem to be growing normally. The chicken eggs go into lockdown midway through next week and should start hatching out this time next week. Guineas a week afer, ducks another week after.

We leave next Wednesday to go look at some potential properties. We will be gone for the first hatch! But it should be ok. We have someone coming to turn the eggs not in lockdown and to look after the other critters 3+ times a day.

Cicken eggs are officially in lockdown (no turning, supposed to be way high humidity and no even opening incubator for last few days in prep of hatch)! Will still open the incubator to turn the guineas and ducks, and will keep the humidity around 50%, because too high and the less developed chicks could die in their shells with still 1-2 weeks of incubation left.

Very exciting stuff. They say bantam chickens may hatch a few days early tho, and there is a banty egg in there so we will see. :)

Candled 3 of the chicken eggs this morn, all three had internally pipped a day early.. we may have chicks by tomorrow or maybe even tonight depending on how quickly they go through the hatch process. In any case, yay

Also, looking up duck incubation time by breed, the ducks may hatch next week, not in 2 weeks.

Quoting myself to reshare video without taking the time to find it again because I am laaaaaaazy this morn :p

Day 19 today if I have counted proper, and chicks have internally pipped (can see regular movement as tho breathing, also there is a small moving protrusion in the air sacs when candled very carefully. Still no peeps.

I figured they would hatch a smidge on the early side, the quail usually did. My incubator must run a degree warm or two is the only thing I can figure. That, or I'm setting it a smidge high. Still air incubator with heating element at the top, so the higher off the ground an egg is, the warmer it is. They say to measure 100-101 F sitting right above eggs for a still air. I had the temp probe on top of the chicken eggs since was a nice midway between teeny guineas and giant duckkos. Chicken body temp (and most birds) is about 104F. Maybe I just set it too high, I aimed for to keep the temp reading around 101F above the chickies.

This is exciting. Also, sadly someone bought the property we were going to go look at ( :(:(:( ) but we get to be here for the hatch, so that's cool( :D:D:D ). We will find another property, it will all work out. But I'm not going to lie: I'm pretty disappointed by the setback. I want to get out of this city!

New dog settling in very well. Did I mention we named him Lucky? Lol I can't get over how clichΓ© of a name that is, like naming a collie Lassie or a black and white beagle Snoopy, or maybe even worse: a dog named fifi, rover, or spot. Haha I do think it is cute tho, I'm just amused by the clichΓ©.

Lucky is a very good doggo.

Ohemgosh- I didn't mention Luckko on this thread yet! So we adopted a new dog coming up on a week ago. A street dog from Puerto Rico who had been abused, no less. But he is settling in well. Finally finished introductions yesterday with my terrier who is a smidge standoffish with those outside his pack, and a wee bit jealous, and only the teeniest bit possessive of me (lmao, he is very all of those things. Is what I get for rescuing a half scottie and not neutering him (health reasons, may re look into in the future)). Anyway, they now play togetger and tolerate each other. In time I'm sure it will get better.

For whatever reason I cant edit posts rn, sorry for triple post.

Just double checked. Chickens run 105-107F not 104. Hmm

They have started to "zip" out of their shells. But it is almost 1 am, so I am calling it a night. Baby chickkos will have to wait for the morning.

7 out so far. Will move to brooder tomorrow am. Had to help one hatch, but he seems fine now and it's been several hours since then.
