G'day everyone
Just wondering if there are any Finch breeders here?
If there are, say G'day and tell us a bit about your collection and your setup - I'm feeling a bit lonely here :(

To get started, might give everyone the run down what I have got:

I keep in regards to finches -
* African Red Billed Firefinches
* Orange Breasted Waxbills
* White Rumped Double Barred Finches
* Gouldian Finches
* Blue Faced Parrotfinches

And my most prized birds...

* Aberdeen Finches (Not many in Australia)
* Javan Munias (I'm one of a very few people who keep these in Aus)
* Black Rumped Double Barred Finches (Not many of these in Aus either)
* Red Strawberry Finches

I house my Aberdeens, Red Strawbs, Javan Munias, Black Rumped Double Bars and Blue Faced Parrotfinches in an aviary 5m long x 2.2m wide and 2.2m high
The other finches are housed in an aviary 3m long x 1.5m wide and 2.1m tall.

Cheers
Noah Till

Currently I have none, but I have the capacity to adopt a minimum and maximum of two budgies - preferably a bonded pair or two males.
I wish to one day keep Goulian finches, love the Wild Black headed form.
Most of the color mutations though are grotesque distortions of a naturally beautiful wild bird that comes in 3 different wild forms, 2 of which are absolutely stunning. Are they tough to keep? Perhaps I should start with Zebras and wait 2 years before taking on these colourful gems of the bird world.

Right now I cannot take on the commitment of pet birds due to various circumstances .

I am more of a Fish person as far as pets are concerned.

But am interested in this thread- hope someone responds.

Gouldians are a bit hard to get going, and when I got into them to start off with I had trouble with them, but now they are pretty easy
I keep the pure normal Blackhead Form, Pure normals are the best in my opinion, you just can't beat them in colour!!
Give Zebra Finches and Bengalese a go first, and once you get the hang of them you can then work your way up the finch 'ladder' and get some Gouldians!

Thanks

I'm not a breeder, but I do have 2 flights of finches. One is all Zebras, and the other has Gouldians, Bengalese, & Owl finches, as well as my 2 Bourke's.
I really love everything about finches, from their sounds to the community they create. I love watching them interact with each other.

Noah, you have so many awesome species! Your flights sound amazing too. Do you have any pictures you could share? I'd love to see your set-up and your birds.

Very nice vision Noah, I’ll bet they’re impressed with their new palatial digs and your 24/7 butler services :)

Hope you’re all managing to keep your feet dry up there too!

Haha, Thankyou very much

They are pretty happy, now all the birds have more room that some are moved around into the new aviary, and a lot are breeding which is a sure sign they are happy, especially with how picky finches are

Yes, a bit wet up here, the new aviary got a bit of water in it because it has a flat roof, but the benefits of the rain heighten the lows, never seen creeks and dams full and green grass for a very long time

Scomo is high and dry, and is getting all spruced up for his new 'bird:08::40:' (and I mean the feathered kind!), that should be arriving soon:)

Thanks
Noah Till

No doubt the wet weather will be good incentive for a little breeding, further convincing little birdies that conditions are good and that there’ll be plenty of food about, hopefully for their wild cousins as well.

Sounds like you’ve got a hen all lined up for ScoMo?? I’m looking forward to baby photos :)

Finches have gone crazy with the rain, and have sent most of them to breeding, so hopefully will have some surplus to take to the Downs Bird breeders Association auction

Indeed a lovely Blue Bird for Scomo, DNA sexing results arrive next week, then there's no stopping him!

Noah, your birds are stunning! Their home is absolutely amazing, what a beautiful place they have to live in!

It was also awesome to see you in the video! I love all the greenery everywhere, everything looks so natural. No wonder you have so much success with breeding, they are obviously living a wonderful, happy life. Thank you for sharing!

Thankyou very much Terry! I'll try and upload some more photos tonight of some of the more rarer birds!
The finches love the brush against the walls, and in the wire cylinders, as this is the places that they love to nest and hide in.
Plus, a good diet and healthy routine and hygiene is the best thing you can do for finches, or otherwise you'll have a lot of trouble thats for sure
Thanks
Noah Till

Many years ago, I was involved in a captive breeding program for endangered finches with the goal of maintaining genetic diversity and eventual reintroduction into wilds. Specifications and methods were very regimented and personal relationships with the birds were minimized by design. Even so, I loved them. Few beings are more beautiful and enchanting than little finches. I also had a few canaries along the way. I always enjoy hearing about members' little guys. Thank you for sharing! Thank you, thank you!
