Scarlet-chested or Splendid parrots deal with 117 deg F heat!

When I was filming in the remote outback regions of South Australia I was delighted to stumble upon a gorgeous male Splendid or Scarlet-chested parrot. It was so hot at about 117 deg F the poor thing could only escape by digging in the sand in a shady area to find comfort. There is nothing in the world like the experience of seeing our cage birds flying wild and free in their native country! It was an amazing project and I will never be the same having spent time in Aus.

OH boy is that a pretty bird as you said. I just cannot imagine why a person would want to trap a wild bird. Yes I can = $$$$$$$$$$$$

Wow! I'm so jealous that you got to experience that.

Poor little guy in that heat. Too bad you couldn't set up a little kiddie pool for him to cool off in.

Funny you should mention that. I did buy a aluminum turkey roaster and a plastic bucket. I put a needle hole in the bottom of the bucket to create a drip where the bucket hung over the alumin turkey roaster pan. It was so so hot that birds came from all around and just sat in the water even though it got real warm too. One bit of trivia is that the Scarlet-chest is probably the most heat tolerant of all of the neophemas. No wonder it lives in desert scrub regions almost exclusively. So the little Scarlet-chest spurned my offer for a drink and a bath (from what I can tell from watching) and instead dug in the sand to cool off. Scientists figure that they get their moisture from plant dew and vegetation as they are often many miles from any water source.
