i would love not to have to shop at thoes places but i dont have a privately owned pet store anywhere remotely close so i have to go to petsmart but i deff wouldnt advise anyone to shop at petco...there were dead budgies the other ones were picking at and i boought a gecko one time and when they were taking him out the dropped it like 4 or 5 feet like wtf he died like a week later from internal bleeding and a bone disfunction from being dropped.....also i wouldnt shop at pet supplies i walked in one day and this bunny was laying down panting and dying and they did nothing....its terrible how even pet stores treat animals....the only place that ever actually helps is petsmart

It not fair to label all chain pet stores as bad and all indy stores as good. The Petsmart near us is very good. Very clean aisles and animal enclosures. Staff is friendly and seems knowledgable.

We have an independent pet store about 10 miles away...puppies are always sick, everytime I go in it seems that someone was wanting a refund because their puppy died. Fish floating in the aquariums, etc. They were the only store that sold feeder rats when my son had his boa, but I would never recommend them.

i saw that video b4, its sickening, i couldnt watch it again. the petco near me takes verry good care of the animals, but i just wish they came from somewhere that cares about animals. i agree with HRH DI, dispite the comment i left on another thread, but HRH DI changed my mind. i guess it depends on who owns the store and the staff they hire.

I have a Pet Quarters which is only in Maine and they treat their animals very well. I have never seen anything dead or dying there and the fish are very lively. They have an iguana there and the cage is always very clean. I try to go there when ever I need something but they don't have as big of a selection as Petco so I end up going to Petco sometimes...

I'm lucky, the closest pet store is independantly owned, specializes in birds and so has a better selection of bird stuff than Petsmart. They also operate a bird rescue out of the back.

Lucky!! My closest bird store is Petco. Pet quarters is close and I like buying from there for my fish but all they really have for birds is millet, a few cages and some toys.

It bothers me.// but the thing with them throwing the rats in the bag... those are feeder rats for snakes and large reptiles. If they gas them, the gasses get passed to your reptile. Granted, I hate the way that the animals are treated and I'm not in their defense on bit, just pointing out that they do supply pre-killed feeders, and that's the most efficient way to do it. I had to pre-kill rats for Jake (12' burmese python) because he wouldn't kill them himself and I had to break their necks.

I watched food inc last night and was appalled. It's streaming on netflix if anyone wants to watch it. It's not just the grossness? It's about the food industry in general. there's parts about chicken, corn, beef, and some others, I didn't make it through the whole thing, fell asleep after a long day lol

I have heard that movie is really something to see and gets you thinking about raising your own food sources instead....I have yet to watch it...I have netflix, if I think I have the stomach for it, maybe I will try to watch it this weekend.

RIP Constantine: Jenday Conure
I am a Pet Care Associate at one of the PetsMarts in my area and must say the most important things to me are the animals. If one even looks like something is wrong or I just have a feeling, off to the vet it goes. After I got my job, I researched diseases for the animals that we carry and know what to look for and how to treat them. I've only ever pulled one dead animal from our cages in my six months of working there and that was because the shipment of hamsters was in horrible condition. Also, if I don't think the customer can take care of the animal, I refuse to sell. Because of that, I get a lot of customer complaints but I don't give a poo. Working at PetsMart has shown me just how stupid people are when it comes to having animals. The thing I hate the most is when a parent wants an animal for their tiny child and argues with me and tries to use their crying child to soften me. I just say no to the child's face then call a manager. Dumb a** people....

It pisses me off that my Con came from one of those nasty f***ing places. My head just throbs with rage thinking about it >.< oh my god! Sorry about my rant but it just makes me so fricken mad! I need to get out of the pet trade.

I had to pre-kill rats for Jake (12' burmese python) because he wouldn't kill them himself and I had to break their necks.

This actually isn't true, when I had more reptiles I started breeding my own rats after I bought a bag of mice at a show and then realized that they all had their throats slit:mad: I got so mad I decided that I would breed my own feeders that way I knew for sure that they were at least being taken care of properly and killed humanely. I killed mine using CO2 gas, With enough CO2, you can drop a rat in a bucket and it will be dead before it hits the bottom and it will not harm the animal that will be eating it, I did this for years and so do many others.

The best thing you can do to stop this is to stop supporting any pet store that sells live animals. I know it can be hard to find them and it's not as much "fun" to go to a store that doesn't have animals but it is certainly much kinder. I prefer stores that don't sell animals but that have adoptions or animals that live at the shop.

I hate to say it and sound like this, but I get a little frustrated when people get mad about videos like these and swear up and down that if they ever saw an animal being treated that way that they would do this or that to the person, but then they turn around and eat animal products. :31: I will never tell you what you should or shouldn't eat, but honestly, farmed animals are treated way worse and on a much larger scale, yet everyone seems to overlook this. I hate that people seem to pick and choose which animals have the right to be treated with kindness, did you know that pigs are actually more intelligent than dogs? That chickens have 30 different calls in their language that humans can recognize and that cows are very social creatures that cry and mourn when their babies are taken from them so that humans can steal their milk? If you really want to see what happens go to EARTHLINGS - Make the Connection. | Nation Earth and watch their free documentary.

Okay, i'm off my soapbox now ;)

Organic farming can actually be worse because for meat or milk to be considered organic the animal cannot receive any kind of antibiotics, which means that if they get sick or injured, they cannot be treated. Same thing with cage free, cage free doesn't really mean cage free, it just means they can't be kept in battery cages, but most cage free chickens still never get to see the sun or walk on actual grass, and in the end they are slaughtered when they stop producing eggs and any male chicks born at a hatchery are instantly killed, usually by being thrown in a grinder alive, thrown in the trash alive, or just left to starve and die in bins.

Check out the movie Forks over knives, it's on netflix, it is not gruesome in any way, it is all about plant based diets and nutrition, it's a great film. :)

That video is awful it makes me sick as well but it does not suprise me

I used to work at a pet store and saw some awful things happen a female bearded dragon who in the process of laying eggs had something go wrong and started expelling her own organs the manager tried to shove them back inside her wrapped her the best she could in packing tape and left it an a small plastic container with a few air holes to see if it would get better but refused to take it to the vet cause it would cost more than it was worth to sell it. The poor thing died probably a very painful death.

Puppies who had parvo who were locked in the warehouse bays and denied vet care other puppies who had been exposed to the virus sold as healthy and when customers complained they did nothing

They sold a chinchilla to a young child maybe 10 years old without parental consent he came in with no parents and later the parents brought it back (the same day) saying their child was not allowed to make that purchase and wanted to return it the manager denied them the return the family was going to let it go right in the parking lot so i said i would take it in and find it a home as i had a friend that was looking for a chinchilla and got written up on warning for "stealing" from the company because i was trying to do the right thing. All these incidents happened within two weeks of me starting work there. I quit the day they wrote me up on warning and i have not gone back there for anything. This was another chain pet store though not one of those mentioned in that video. It is awful the way some people treat animals
