I know I saw on one of the posts someone said they make a mash for thier birds and freeze it-only pulling out what they need. Of course when I go back looking I cannot find the member who posted that...

So I would love to know what you put in your mash!

pumpkin( fresh when available)
broccoli
carrots
brussel sprouts
spinach
2 very ripe bananas

yep your the one! Thank you so much! Do you puree the veggies or leave them more as a lump? I wanted to add some variety in my mornings. I do a birdie muffin but I think both of my girls are getting bored with that during the week.

Oh, oh, quick suggestion if you plan on using Couscous or Quinoa! You can get big bags of the grains for MUCH cheaper than the BIG supermarket prices if you go to your local ethnic grocery store, in particular your local Greek or Middle Eastern market.

I use my food processor to chop up the fruits and veggies. Some are left in chunks others are almost pureed, but I am feeding a GCC. I mix everything together well then freeze in ice cube trays. After it is frozen I vacuum pack a weeks worth of the mix per bag. The veggies and fruits change, but I try to give a good variety. I have used (not all at one time),

Sweet potatoes
Winter Squash (acorn, spaghetti, pumpkin, butternut, kabocha)
Summer Squash (yellow, grey and zucchini)
Carrots and Tops
Green Beans
Snap Peas
Bok Choy
Collard Greens
Kale
Broccoli
Swiss Chard
Bell Peppers (red, green, yellow and orange)
Corn
Brussel Sprouts
Mustard Greens
Cranberries
Blueberries
Mango
Apple
Orange
Papaya
Pomegranate Seeds

For grains
Brown Rice
Wild Rice
Amaranth
Quinoa
Barley
Lentils
Beans (I forget what type)
Whole Grain Pasta

And I add fresh sprouts to the food before feeding, I have a few different types.

Red Clover
Broccoli
Alfalfa
Collard Greens
Mustard
Radish
Cabbage

I have recently become involved with a bird breeder here that has 106 big birds, half of which are macaws. Naturally feeding such a flock is a major operation, but I watched what he is feeding. He pressure cooks on the stove oats and rice, then adds crock pot cooked pinto beans and sunflower seeds in the shell. According to him, oats contain all of the nutrients except one and rice contains all of the nutrients except one, but not the same one. He adds a can of string beans and other things to this mix and feeds it freshly made daily. I was thinking of freezing it myself, like your suggestion and I too have a bag sealer. I will experiment with this as all ingredients are cheap and can be bought in bulk.

I hope this doesn't sound completely stupid, but do you cook this first, then freeze or do you freeze raw? Did I miss something here? :(

I cook mine first, then freeze. Seperate into portions.
Makes it convenient to grab a portion, thaw and serve, My guys liked it warmed up. Spoiled birdies!
