Hi everyone,
I would like to know if my GC Conure can eat Raw sun flower seeds, Hazzle nuts and pumpkin seeds... I know in my book and online site say they can eat all nuts, and seeds, is that true? I know they can't eat coco bean seeds, coffee nuts. I just want to be sure.

yes she can eat those but they should be treats cause her main diet should be fruits, veggies, beans (cooked), and only some seeds and pellets

Dally,
Thanks, yea... It's questionable on Hazzle nuts... Anyone else know?
Marcia,
Thanks, I have try veggies yet, but my bird love those natural dried raisins and papaya I by from WholeFoods. What about soy bean? I think my book say don't feed soy bean. I were going to give my bird a cracker but I read Soy lectins and soy oil. So I don't know if I could.

As far as I'm aware, hazelnuts is safe.

Peanuts though are on the "iffy" list. They really aren't nuts, and some nuts may have gone bad and carry harmful mold.

I rarely ever feed nuts to my birds because I mainly have the smaller species who are more interested in the smaller seeds... and the times that I have tried nuts, there wasn't much interest! (even if they were slivered or chopped up) - might be time to try again, though!

Monica,
Thank you. I had feed my friends Blue C. Conure when I were young. I were young, about 10-12 years old. Yes, it was a big responsiblility to take care both my friends(my brothers friend as well) and my brothers Spectacle Amazon. They ate well, mix with dried natural fruits. I mostly use peanuts for teaching tricks, I mostly feed small seeds and dried fruits I by from local pet shop(non chain store).

Anyone else know the situation with soy bean?

I have never heard of hazelnuts being toxic. Kiwi gets them on occasion (when the store has those big bins of mixed whole-shell nuts). With nuts, they should never be salted, and only fed as a treat. Nuts are too fatty to be fed as a dietary staple for most species, except hyacinth macaws, which I believe have to eat a lot of brazil nuts (?) to remain in good health. Sunflower and pumpkin seeds can be fed more often, but only as a part of an otherwise varied diet (lots of fruits/veggies, cooked grains/beans, healthy table foods ect...).

Antoinette- are you getting at peanuts being bad because many birds eat too many of them (since they are fatty)? I haven't ever heard of them being toxic, just something that should be a treat.

I've actually never heard of that before. Is that true for the ones in seed mix, or ones sold for human consumption or what? Kiwi won't eat peanuts anyways, he flings them, but I eat peanuts from the grocery store :)

animal grade ones are more likely to carry it, as far as i've heard, but both human and animal grade peanuts can carry it. they grow in the ground, which is where the mold contaminates them

That's why I said peanuts are on the iffy list. If peanuts are in pellets, I don't care, but I wont feed peanuts otherwise.

They aren't nuts, and there are healthier options. It is possible for holiday nuts to be polished and dyed as well... and other nuts can also go off and become moldy... but it's supposedly a higher chance in peanuts than true nuts.

Ah... I see. Wow, my old bird used to eat peanuts(small amount) because its was mix in the food package at the pet store. It's label parrot food, so I bought it. Anyways, that's long time ago... Now I know, I will not give it.

Not all supermarket nuts have dye, try natural supermarket store like WholeFoods. No dye and some comes unsalted. I heard some case feeding birds with fruits that has small seeds like kiwi may choke.
