Ordered last year from Higgins and the millet they sent was half the size and not as fresh as the previous - will attach picture - then ordered from Foster & Smith and it was just ok not great millet but last order their supplier started punching holes in the bags so how clean is that millet getting shipped all over who knows where with holes in the bags??? Am I being too picky? I tried to talk to Higgins about the extreme decline in their millet quality and was told over the phone that as long as it wasn't spoiled (will the bird eat it was their test of spoiled or not) no return-refund - i did not use it as some of the sprays had blackened seeds. Where is a good place to buy millet? Thank you for your reply!

I got several packages last fall from a local pet store.....it's Kaytee brand & it has two holes punched in it...not sure if it is for ventilation or for mounting on a peg hook display.....the bottom edge has a Jun 14, expiration date on it & the sprays are 10" - 12" long & even though it has the holes in it, there have been no bugs or moths from any of the packages.....I lifted all of my last packs out of a new box they were going to stock from.....

There's Windy City parrot there near you, also wally world carry's millet, but with millet, who ever is branding it may not be the packager.....

If you have a pet smart near they carry a brand called living creatures or something like that it's packaging is yellow, white with black letters. I have found that to be the best millet. I don't feed it that often but when i do i always get that brand. Some millet just looks old or just icky this always looks fresh and clean. It also comes in flavors.

Its also super easy to grow your own! I grow mine in a 4 foot sq raised bed and get plenty for most of the year. Plant it soon and will be ready by fall.

Thanks for the replies - one person told me they punch the holes in the bag so that the bag doesn't hold air and more bags can fit in a box for shipping - --
with the holes in the bag and boxes not taped up on all the cracks I was worried about germs or like maybe toxic stuff drifting in like insecticide powder or something else during shipping - didn't even think about bugs but if they spray the trucks and warehouses and the boxes aren't taped well and there are holes punched in bags then what --- ick! I will say that Higgins always taped their boxes so well that even tho the millet wasn't in a plastic bag no hulls or seeds leaked out until it was opened.

Anyone else out there have a good mail order source for millet --- maybe it would be easier just to grow it!!!!

Hey ShelleyBorg does it keep then until your next crop is ready??? how do you store it?
Thanks!!!!!:yellow1:

I make sure its really dry then part of the crop goes into a plastic box and into the freezer. The rest goes into a 5 gal glass jar . I will be growing more this year and will be storing it in 5 gal food grade buckets.
It will last a year or two this way.

Thank you ShellyBorg -- this sounds like a good plan - where did you get your initial seeds from?

Pritti (Cherry-Head Conure) -- Fly in Peace my beautiful boy. Forever I'll love you.
There is also flavored millet now. Petsmart has one with only natural orange oil to flavor. It smells sooooo good. Pritti will not eat it at all. I guess i will use it as potpurri, lol. Actually petsmart is super great about taking dood back if pets womt eat it.

So u have nothing to lose if petsmart isnt a long trip for u.

I get it from the nicest millet I can find. Then I just start to save some back every year. I will not feed seed that will not sprout to my birds.

The nice thing about millet is you can even grow it in posts on a balcony if that's all the space you have.

Went to PetSmart and got some packaged Millet (no holes punched in the bags - woot!) - it's not the best millet but it is as good as what came from Foster & Smith -- not as good as Higgens used to be /sigh/

Hey ShellyBorg you are from Calli have you ever order the California Millet that is on Amazon?

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Anyone else out there order millet on line????:grey:

I have zero experience growing anything, so growing millets on my own doesn't sound easy. Any tip?

I ordered millets for the first time for Thalj & Skittles few days ago. I think I would prefer to grow my own. I would appreciate tips.

millet is easy to grow:
1,get a pot or window box
2,put in soil
3,grab some millet
4,shake so there are hundreds of seed in pot or window box
5,cover up with a thin layer of lose soil
6,water daily
7,once they are seedlings take out all grown ones and churn up soil
8,once non grown seeds are not in sight replant seedlings (make shore there are 1 inch gaps between them)
9, water seedlings
10, wait for them to grow keep on watering daily
11, feed to your fid!!!!!!!
millet does best indoors but outdoors is fine
millet doe best in heat :)

Here in Fla we plant millet for wild game birds. Pretty simple, plow/till,broadcast seed, fertilizer with 20/20/20, if it doesn't get too wet or dry it goes to head in about 90 days. We buy 50lb bags from the Ag Supply.
