I feed my parrots almonds in the shell. The almonds are pasteurized. Don't know if steam or propylene oxide was used in the process. Are these safe? What do others use?
Thanks

i dont know if they are safe or not that way, but i feed natural shell-less human grade almonds (no salt or sugar)

I want to thank you for raising this question, as it made me look up the pasteurizing process for almonds, and THIS is what I found. It's quite upsetting!

Since my fids (especially the macaws) LOVE almonds in the shell, I guess I will have to fork out organic grown almonds from now on for an outrageous price.

Until I learn more about this, my current stash of almonds won't be fed.

Almonds in my area in Canada were recalled last winter due to salmonella. It left me with no supply and I used them for foraging and keeping beaks trimmed. I found a site in the US and ordered 25 pounds! When I went back on their site to see what else they had I found that their almonds were pasteurized and that this is US law, so I found the same info as you JerseyWendy when I researched it. Too bad I didn't research it before I bought them. I have fed my birds almonds for some time and now I'm worried that I may have compromised their health:(
