Auggie: Dusky Conure
While it's nothing new I've just been struck, after sharing breakfast with him, by the fact that Auggie loves cheese. There's not a lot of human food that he takes to, other than fruit (there is a reason I call him the fruit-bat). I've tried to get him to eat veggies, as I try to get myself to, but neither of us are good about it.

This morning for breakfast he had a plate with pieces of muffin, some mozzarella chunks, and a chopped up hard boiled egg. He scarfed down the cheese but apparently couldn't tell the cheese from pieces from egg white... boy was he disappointed each time he picked up egg [standing there with egg on his face! sorry, couldn't resist that one]. He ended up passing on the egg and muffin but he picked through it all to get each bit of the cheese.

I've known for a while that he liked cheese, but it just struck me this morning about how strange that seems.

Are their any out of the ordinary foods that your birds like?

Dear Auggie's Dad,
My birds love cheese too and they love my birdie muffins - I make different kinds. One of the ones they love is apple and cheddar muffins. I know that I love a slice of cheese on apple pie at times and I put the 2 together. yum... yum... The only thing is I have to watch the amount of cheese I give them because of the fat content.

White Cap Pionus "Snoopy"
My young WC Pionus LOVES cheese. I used to use it sparingly for treats but then i read somewhere that it was bad for her so I stopped. So from your post I assume it is OK?
Re eggs, you might try scrambled -- another big favorite of my baby.

Cheese isn't 'bad' per se. Birds do lack the enzymes to fully digest dairy so if they fill up on it they can get very bad indigestion but in moderation it should be fine.

Also cheese or yogurt are already partially digested by the microorganisms used to make them so these are not as hard to digest as milk.

our conure loved any and everything he saw us eating... turkey, mashed potatoes, ice cream, pot roast, pizza(mainlyjust the bread), mac n cheese, and especially oatmeal. almost everything we let him have was in verrrry small quantities because we didn't want him to have health problems, but everytime we started eating he would get crazed and do whatever it takes to get to the food. His favorite thing was oatmeal... every morning we would let him run in between our (gf and mine) two bowls and just go to town in the oatmeal. he absolutley loved it.

Every bird has their own tastes. Just keep trying different things: fresh fruits and veggies, or whatever snacks you have around (with the exception of dangerous foods - see the toxic list if needed).

But personally I find that dried fruits are VERY handy. There is much less mess and they keep for a long time. I always have dried papayas and dried blueberries. Rasins are great too - especially in the little single serve boxes; let them tear apart the box and eat the raisins.
