Chop mix- what foods to avoid?

I want to start making chop mix for our zon and budgie, and I've found a few recipes from other posts, but I was wondering if there are any ingredients I should avoid?? I saw a post where some were saying to avoid kidney beans- if not cooked properly they could be toxic to birds..?

Re: Chop mix- what foods to avoid?

This is the recipe that I use as a starting point, then I add things or remove things depending on what looks good at the store. I always add dandelion greens and leave out the brown rice. Whenever I'm not sure of a ingredient I first check the internet, and if I still feel unsure I call my avian vet and ask.

Chop Mix For Your Birds

I have kidney beans in the chop mix, it's part of the 16 bean soup that I buy. I soak it over night per instructions on package then cook them.

Any particular reason you leave out the brown rice? This might be a silly question- but I'm assuming both my birds can eat the same chop mix (just serve different quantities based on their size)?

Re: Chop mix- what foods to avoid?

We're going grocery shopping tonight, so I'm excited to get chop mix ingredients! I just really hope they like it! It'd be disappointing to have a freezer full of chop they won't eat :/ I'm sure the dogs would like it though if that were the case hahahha :P

My vet doesn't want me feeding Rosie a ton of grains, so I only include barley and quinoa as I feel they are more beneficial.

Yeah, she had been eating a staple sun flower seed diet that was killing her. She had organ failure, calcium deficiency, and few other problems. Although it took a long time I was very lucky that all she needed was a excellent diet so her body could sort itself out and sort of 'reboot' itself.
