Sprite the cinnamon green cheek conure.
Recently I thought to really take a look at the ingredients in Sprite's Zupreem Avian Entrees and realized the first ingredient is ground corn and the fifth ingredient is ground wheat, no doubt GMO. Knowing that corn and wheat isn't the best thing for Sprite I hate feeding him pellets that are loaded with it. I've been looking into pellets that will take corn and wheat out of his diet almost completely (I give him bread once in a while just as a treat). So far I've found TOPs and Goldenfeast Goldn'Obles. Looking at these I've also realized I've been paying a lot for corn filled pellets, about 10 dollars/pound! I was also thinking about feeding Sprite the harvest blend from my safe bird store that has pellets in it but the pellets that are in it do contain lots of corn so I was thinking of instead getting the pellet free ones and adding my choice of pellets. Thanks for the help :grey:

Well, there is nothing wrong with feeding birds corn as long as it's fresh (the wild parrots eat it all the time). It's the dried, animal-feed quality corn that is bad. Same with wheat, animal feed wheat = bad - but organically-grown, human-grade wheat is OK (I get mine from Barry Farm). As to soy, I don't feed any of my animals (dogs, cats, birds) any soy. Too iffy for my peace of mind and it's all GMO (did you see the study with pigs fed GMOs?). I also don't feed pellets, I don't consider them the healthiest option and I am very picky when it comes to what my animals eat.

You are right about worrying about the GMO Goldenfeast is now using Organic Corn and Soy in all of their blends. Goldn'Obles and Top's are good choices. I think we all need to read the labels. Labels if done right the first ingredient should be the ingredient that is in it the most and the last should have the least. When mixes are mixed with other mixes you don't know and would never be cover by any recalls. I would never never recommend buying a bulk or mixed bird food you never know where is mixed, what it's being mixed with, what it's being exposed to.
