I just placed an order for 25lbs of whole in shell mixed nuts. Kali will be 5 months old when she comes home. I was wondering if I will need to shell them because of her age? I know I will have to with the brazils and harder nuts but do you think she can handle the pecans or almonds?

Not sure about a 5-month-old's nut-cracking ability but I'm SURE you don't need 25 lbs! You might have a challenge keeping them fresh for as long as they last.

Sheryl , I bought them in bulk for the best price, 2.99 a lb. I will freeze some and eat some myself. I will prob end up shelling them myself for her until she is a lil older.

Nope, you don't need to shell them. Kali will work them JUST fine, I know my Niko did when he was 4 months. :D

Did Niko take I interest in the nuts right away or did you have to encourage him to break into them. I really want to make sure Kali has a balanced diet. I also grow my own ORGANIC veggies here. I blend ghost peppers and water with a lil oil to make a spray. It repels EVERYTHING from the veggies!
I bought a kitchen scale for 10.00 and added one of those things you hang bracelets on to weight her.

Yes, Niko took interest in the unshelled nuts right away because the breeder had offered them to him already. :) Now he may not have cracked the Brazilian Nuts right away, but all the others were a piece of cake for him.

Oh I LOVE to hear about your organic garden!!! Please tell me more about how you make that spray to keep nasties away, because I, too, ONLY use organic stuff in my yard (mainly roses and perennials, only have 3 vegetable beds)

I have a vitamix blender but you can get this done with any blender. I take 6 ghost peppers that I froze from the year before and add them to the blender. I then add a half tsp of olive oil and fill with water. Blend it together and strain through a cheesecloth. Add the water to a spray bottle and spray your garden. It is safe for your plants.
It will not kill bugs but it will repel them.
If you know how how bad potato bugs are and how resistant they are to pesticide, this mix gets rid of them to!

If you make this be sure to wear gloves and even goggles... ghost peppers are insanely hot and can easily burn your skin!!!

Awesome!!! Thank you SO much!!!

Now for a dumb question: Can I use FRESH ghost peppers? I know our local farmer's market has them, and heck yeah, I will be needing gloves. The seeds are so hot that they burn my skin unless I wash soon after handling them. :11: (Ripley & Sam love them!! :32:)

Fresh is best! I just use the frozen ones because I grew them and rather than buy them, I already have them. It is nothing like having fresh organic food available.

Watch him with the Brazil nuts, my Mac pierced one and got it stuck on his beak and started to panic. Luckily my wife was home to rescue him.

Ahhh. Good price. I don't blame you. Sounds like you might have a freezer too. I was just remembering last season all my friends with pecan trees were giving their extras to me for my fids. I couldn't keep up with storing them and ended up having to feed a lot to the squirrels (Please don't tell) LOL.

At my old house I had all kinds of nut trees...boy do I miss that!! I do have 2 large freezers, vacuum sealers, etc. I live in the middle of nowhere, so you learn to store food:) lol I bet you had some fat and happy squirrels!!
