So all these years of having birds and I'd never tried spouts, other than the ones you can buy at the store...but after reading a bunch, I decided to experiment. I just used some of the parrot mix, picking a lot of sunflower seeds, etc because they are supposedly dramatically better for the bird when sprouted vs. as seeds. All the articles said they'd just go crazy for them, but I was a bit skeptical...

But they were right! All 4 of my FIDs are in love.

I've been wanting to try that for a while, but I haven't gotten around to it ever. Maybe you'll be my inspiration to actually try it out! Or maybe I'll forget in another half hour and get distracted...

I'm excited to try those. I ordered an EZ Sprout from MSBS and currently have some lentils in there sprouting. Getting impatient waiting for them to sprout lol.

I just used a mason jar. I soaked for 6-8 hours and rinsed/drained, covered the jar with plastic wrap and laid it on it's side. I had spouts in 2 days. Today I rinsed them and set them in a little shallow tupperware on a paper towel. They can continue to grow and I'll feed them as the birds want and tonight I can start a new batch. :)

I was just looking this up online today!! How do you sprout the sunflower seeds? Do you leave them in the shell or take them out? I couldn't find a good explanation on youtube. I would like to get some parakeet seed and try sprouting that. All I have here at home is the parrot mix and wild bird seed (which I would be afraid to give to my fids). I did take some seeds from my parrot mix and some thistle seed to try and sprout. And then in a different container I have chia seeds to try. I don't know if any of it will work or not, but I hope Sassy and Chico like them if it does work!
