I can't find any unshelled mixed nuts in a local store (at least not until the holidays roll around), so I'll be ordering nuts for my soon-to-be blue and gold macaw online.

But.. I have no idea how many nuts really come in a pound  If I order a 25lbs box of mixed nuts, will that be too many for him to healthfully go through before they start getting unfresh? Should I order a 5lbs bag instead?

Oh, that's a great idea! Wouldn't have occurred to me that I could freeze nuts.

Watch your frozen nuts for freezer burn...my guys are particular and won't eat anything that's been in the freezer too long & has developed a funny taste.....learned the hard way when I found a good deal at a bird fair several years ago and stocked up.....

Thanks! That is a very good point -- I will definitely keep my eye on them. I'll just feed any freezer burned ones to hubby :D

And that just settles it! If Maya says so, I guess I'll have to go for the 25lbs box.

I ordered about 7 pounds of mixed nuts and one macaw went throught them in about a month. I did find one store in my area that had mixed nuts and walnuts during the summer months. Just keep looking. I also kept mine in the freezer and took a week's supply out at a time and put those in the fridge. It will also depend on the bird.

We use vacuum sealed bags for the nuts, so we don't have the problem with freezer burn, but YMMV.
