My friend Janine (who owns the rescue) and I decided to have a chop day on Monday, and make an enormous amount since between us we have around 120 birds. We got started at noon, and had to go to a couple of stores to gather everything, and then were back at my house by 2:00pm and got started. We had my oven and all 4 burners going from then until 10:30 pm, and finally finished with the packaging at 11:45pm...a long, but very fun day!
We also made muffins which I will make a new post for:)
We used over 50 ingredients in the chop:

White, red and black quinoa , Hemp Seed
Boiled popcorn kernels , Chickpeas
Yellow and green split peas , 5 bean soup mix
Mung beans , hulled sunflower seeds
Red, Green and yellow lentils , Pumpkin seeds
Millet , Vegetable pasta
Cous Cous , Zucchini
Chia seed , Green Peas
Corn , Pineapple
Long grain brown rice , Pomegranate
Papaya , Strawberries
Sprouts , Celery
Blueberries , Wheat Germ
Pot Barley , Bok Choy
Swiss Chard , Snap Peas
Broccoli , Cauliflower
Red,orange and yellow bell peppers , Jalapeno peppers
Beets and beet greens , Slivered almonds
Kiwi , Flax Seed
Parsnips , Sweet Potatoes
Cranberries , Oats
Spelt Flakes , Carrots
Amaranth , Green beans
Turnips , Pumpkin
Rutabaga , Coconut
Spaghetti Squash , Chili pepper flakes

Here are a couple of pics of the prep and finished chop:

Wow, long day and lots of hard work, but well worth the effort! Looks yummy, and it should with the amazing list of ingredients. Lucky flock of birds.

The only thing I would love to see in the picture........... Is the 120 birds hitting that room just before it is all packed up . THAT would be funny

Great job !

Next time we are going to get started much earlier and already have the ingredients. Poor Reg worked all day, then came home and had to do the water change/evening chop for all our birds. After they had their time out, he joined Janine and I and washed dishes for almost 3 hours non stop, only taking a quick break to mix the chop in the ginormous tub Janine brought. It was 3 feet tall and so big around my arms couldn't fit around it...and we filled it almost to the top..lol..
I think he may arrange to take a vacation on the next chop day..lol.

LOL! That would be a sight to see for sure...but I think I would need a new house after a lottery win to have that much room! We set up a 6 foot folding table in addition to my dining table, and still had stuff on the counters, sideboard..everyhere..lol.

O my gosh Terry! That is an INSANE amount of chop:eek::eek::eek: Please tell me you at least had a food processor to help with some of that chopping! So how long will that amount take for 120 birds to go through?

WOW! That is some 'factory' production there Terry  :D
Done all so neatly and clean too... Or were the pics taken after clean up lol.

As April said, I hope you had a couple food processors... If it were me with all that volume I'd have no fingertips left . I'm pretty clutzy in the kitchen... Recently, a heavy duty SS peeler cut my fingernail in half horizontally! Almost had to go to ER, but just wrapped it and didn't use that finger for the next week!

We did not use the food processor at all for the chopping, it seems to make the pieces too small. Janine washed, peeled and cut into more manageable chunks, and I diced it. I swear, it really was not that bad, except for the beets (which made my throat feel like it was closing up and caused a coughing fit) and the rutabaga that would have been easier to cut with an axe. I will let you know how long it lasts, I have already used a container and a half, and the rest is in the freezer. There were a couple of containers I had that are not sealing as well as others so I want to use those up, then will probably just use this a couple times a week for a change for them:)

We kinda cleaned as we went because we were doing a video and taking pictures. Unfortunately, we should have had a script as we kept forgetting what we were saying and there was a lot of giggling..lol. So next time we will write it down before speaking:)

YIKES, I am cringing at the thought of your poor nail!!! That gives me chills. I would have been freaking out! How long did that take to heal?

AWESOME Terry! How fun it would be to have company for helping and girl giggles. I unfortunately do most chop days by my lonesome although hubby helps now and again.

Terry, I'm IMPRESSED you did ALL of that by hand ! I know the food processors or choppers do make some of the pieces too tiny or not all uniform like hand chopping. Did you switch hands to get equal exercise? LOL:D

It is still sensitive in one little area (been week and a half maybe?) but the top half (closest to the fingertip) detatched itself from the nail bed as the nail bed dried within just a couple days so I was able to take it off then. I heal amazingly quickly, and I think it's because I take vitamins daily and I eat a decent amount of fresh vegetables! Thanks for asking, hope that wasn't too graphic :D. That's why most of the time nowdays I use a chopper. Though this was done with a very sharp peeler!

I wish I could use both hands, Julie, but I am terrible with my left and fear I would have lost a finger completely:(
Your poor finger!!! I am glad it is healing quickly, but wow, it sounds so painful....still shivering here thinking about that.

How did you guys know how much of each ingredient to put in?
Love the idea or getting together with a friend :)

We honestly just stocked right up on the things our fids love the best (broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, snap peas and carrots were the top pick) and then just added smaller amounts of the other ingredients. You can use basically any amounts depending on how much you want to make. Each time will get easier as well to figure that out, I think:)

Terry I wanted to say thanks for this recipe- somehow I found myself out of chop mix the other day so I had to find new recipe since the last batch was edible but not that great (lol). I used your ingredient list as a guideline, but was unable to find a few things and left out the fruits except for blueberries.

This batch includes:
Chickpeas
Corn
Peas
Carrots
Green beans
Red and yellow bell peppers
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Blueberries
Flax seed
Kale
Sugar snap peas
Celery
Steamed brussel sprouts
15 bean mix
Lentils
Veggie pasta
Pearl barley
Quinoa
Long grain brown rice
Boiled popcorn kernels

So far, I think this is the best batch I've done- she's been eating for the last 45 minutes...and counting [emoji33] lol
