Sprouting both chia and flax with a jar doesn't really work from what I've found. They both produce psyllium, which is a heavy slime. It makes them impossible to drain or rinse. You can sprout them on terra cotta dishes..or chia pets.

Understand.
Is this to say, only use sprouted, or in cooked foods?

I had the same problem, I tried to sprout them... Found a solid mass of smily seeds in the morning that could literally be picked up with your hands. I don't know if they are safe for birds, I was sprouting them for me.

Perfectly safe and very healthy. Most times I grind the flax and add it to recipes but sometimes I leave it whole.
Chia I just offer sprinkled over softer foods.

I also use both in my chop. They really seem to like it, too:)
