Near my home is a flock of feral Nanday Conures. Yesterday while stopped at the traffic light i noticed several feeding on the Crepe Myrtle blooms. The sidewalk was covered in chewed pink/purple flowers,LOL. Think i'll pick a few and see what the zons think of them.
Edit; i added a video

I never know what trees and flowers are safe for birds because I don't even know which are which to search....not a plant person at all.. Probably couldn't even pick out poison ivy...

Let us know what they think (and maybe some photos too:p)! Whenever we have flowers in a vase Kiwi tries to eat them (I shoo him away of course, who knows if those are toxic), so I've always been curious how he'd feel about flowers he was allowed to eat. I think seeing a zon eating a flower would be sooooo cute:D

Yes let us know. I gave my mother two crepe myrtle trees about 15 years ago and they are monsters now. They are not treated with chemicals so I'm thinking if they can be eaten, they could be a new treat or food item.

Yup, Crepe Myrtle is perfectly safe for our fids. :D

Oh Captain, I am green with envy that yours are already in bloom. We lost 2 of our Crepe Myrtles due to harsh winters, and I'll have to wait at least another 6 weeks before our last one puts on a show.

Not a very good cell phone pic. There's 3/4 in this pic if you can pick them out. I'll put my good camera in the truck and try to get better pics/video.

Our crepe myrtle has the rose color flowers and is taller than our house. I have a friend who has a dwarf variety and she breaks off branches to put in her linnie cage and they love it.

Here's a video for Kiwibird, enjoy. Wish it was as good as her photos. [ame="https://youtu.be/UnSq2L8rjHU"]078 - YouTube[/ame]

i waited for the Nandays to show back up , but they never did. There's a ton of blooming crepe myrtles,so they could be anywhere.

Thanks Henpecked. You have such cute, sweet birds. They do seem to be enjoying ripping it up:D Are they actually eating any?

BTW, Rod and Reel, what cute names:) I guess Reel doesn't like you messing with her man. Lucy can be that way about Barney too.

At times they were eating them, other times they were shredding them. Some of the zons ate them and about half showed no interest.I put a big bunch on jakes cage and she freaked, later she shredded it up but ate a few buds.

I looked on the way in last night and all the blooms on ours are to high up to reach.

Beautiful video, Captain. Thank you. Rod and Reel are charmers.

My crepe myrtles aren't in bloom yet, but now that I've seen this thread, I'm waiting impatiently.

I would not have thought to give them crepe myrtle blooms had i not seen the feral parrots eating them. I have discovered many local fruit/nuts/seeds etc from watching the feral parrots. if you have feral quakers or conures in your area, pay attention to why they are hanging out in the places you see them. Suburbs are good places for many fruit and nut trees/shrubs. Of course they also love french frys and hang out at the fast food places.
