I wanted to know if the mash I made is safe for the bird to continue eating.

I used cooked brown rice, yellow squash, apple, cucumber, bell pepper, red and romaine lettuce, grapes. I think thats it. All bird-safe foods.

I used the veggie chopper to cut up the lettuce, squash, cucumber, and bell pepper. When the last two were chopped, it made a foamy liquid. I've not used these ingredients in the past, so I didnt expect this.

I mixed it all in, froze little baggies, and started feeding to my GCC (who is sick and needs the extra goodies right now more than ever).

The first bag was liquidy, but seemed fine. The next bag I thawed is very brown and liquidy (liquid is brown). The veggies and fruits look fine, except everything is brown.

Is this batch ok, or did I make a mistake? Do I need to throw it out and make a new batch?

I'm thinking it might be the lettuce or cucumbers. They both have a very high water content and when the water freezes then thaws it leaves behind an unpleasant mess. Next time around you might be better off leaving them out of the initial chop that you're going to freeze and adding them fresh right before feeding.

That being said, I don't think the food spoiled in the freezer, even though it came out with an unappealing color. If it smells OK, then I would use it for today or until you can make a fresh batch.

If you find its safe to use, try adding some ground pellets to sop up the moisture. Oats would probably help too.

Thanks for the replies. I decided to just throw it out and start over. I found some advice on mash recipe sites that said to chop (rather than food-process) wet items like cucumbers, and to use a strainer to drain the items before mixing together and freezing.

And for the person interested in my bird's health - she is a self mutilator and has created another wound after we went on vacation. So she's on antibiotics and in a collar for the time being.
