Oh my! I went fresh food shopping and picked up some grapes for my fids and us. I didn't buy them when I got to the register, they rang up as $8.13!!!!!!! OUCH! Then to add to that, the cashier pointed out they looked a little brown already and she was right. In their place will be pomegranate, orange, cranberries or apples for now.

I have a list of fruits I just won't buy because they are either always rotten or never ripe. Happy to eat them if from a restaurant but won't buy them at a grocery store:

Grapes
Strawberries
Raspberries
Oranges are borderline for me
I've only recently started getting cranberries, but it always seems like a chunk are already rotten so I'm skeptical.

A couple others I can't think of right now. And I refuse to buy discounted fruits because they are always going to be well past their prime.

I have bought past due produce but only veggies like peppers. The are not out of the safety window. My fids love them and devour them.

Grapes here are looking poor too. I will change to the next fruit in season soon.

Grapes here aren't looking so good either. I spent about 10 minutes picking out a handful yesterday and I think everyone thought I was nuts, but Zilla loves her grapes!

I hate buying fruits where you can't see the bottom of the package, usually an indicator that something isn't good there!

Grapes are ridiculously expensive here as well, and I got so lucky yesterday! Our Walmart has a clearance rack where all the fruits and veggies are $1.00 a bag. Sometimes the stuff is good, sometimes I pass. Yesterday, I got 12 pounds of grapes for $4.00! I checked them when I got home, and had to throw away only 3 grapes...the rest look great! Also was able to get a bag of apples, a bag of oranges for me, and a bag of poms for $1.00 each!
The Fids were so happy with chop last night!

I always stop at the clearance section. I've found lots of peppers, yams, oranges, and limes. The nice thing is my store bags them in netting so you can see the items well, and can smell them. Yes I smell my produce, lol. It matters and helps. I found fresh Brussel sprouts in clearance, I'm not a fan, they were in great condition so I bought them and added them to my chop. Both fids love Brussel sprouts so that was a definite win in clearance.

Chris I lived and worked in London for 6 months in 2005. Most shops I went to were small and I had a challenge finding good produce. I befriended a family around the corner from my hotel room that ran a full deli. That's where I got my fresh produce and fresh brewed coffee, they took care of me for sure. I ate pretty much every meal there because I only had a hotel room that had a water kettle only, lol.

I'm lucky where I live that I have lots of options for produce. Apples and bananas are always my standard. I go through bananas like they're going out of style! I usually eat one whole one myself a day, but it's two bananas total because I break it in half and split the rest with the birds!

I stocked up on cranberries (which freeze very well!) and I always have frozen fruit in the freezer which is often cheaper than buying fresh berries and I don't have to worry about them going bad.

I've also got two bags of oranges right now, and generally buy whatever's on sale that week or in season. I think I eat just as much fruit as my birds do.

Paco likes pink lady apples. 1.59 per pound where i am! He shares them with the bunny, but the dog likes them too! Produce can be nasty up north where I am, we are the end of the line for fresh food. I go seasonal as well to get the freshest. He suddenly became afraid of grapes last week? Probably good as they have been nasty here as well. Frozen strawberries are a good replacement for winter.

OHHH lucky you, you have those "Produce Junctions" in the Phily area. My daughter turned me onto them when I went up to visit her once. I'll drive the distance to shop there :) It's only a 2 hr drive and so worth the goodies for cheap prices!
