Lentils & stuff

So I am looking into making chop for my parrots and I got some dried things today but the selection was a little limited. If any of these are not safe I will just not use them, but I wanted to ask first.

This is what I have:
- Green split peas
- Chick peas
- Whole green lentils
- Yellow lentils
- Pearl barley

Any input would be appreciated

Hi I think you are good to go just follow the soak/cook instructions .

As long as they're all cooked your good to go!.
Red lentils, black lentils, and mung beans are also very good.

That was going to be my suggestion, super easy! My family now uses them on their salads.

Thanks guys! I will have a look around for some red lentils, black lentils, and mung beans next food shop

I am actually going to start sprouting next week! Everywhere I look people are raving about sprouted food for their birds, and it seems so easy so why not!

Great stuff good to hear that. Please just make sure you are up to speed with it all before you start so you produce good sprouts and not something that ends up in the bin or will harm your fid. Please let up know how you get on with it.

MY BFA loves cooked barley. I use it a lot in soup and give it to her. I cook a batch with farro and I use a little chicken broth and red pepper flakes to cook it in. I then freeze it in small batches to add to her chop.

Hi, this sounds yummy wouldn't mind some myself! Can I just ask if there is any salt in the chicken broth? I'm sure you already know fids shouldn't be given salt?

Definitely! I've been researching it for the past couple weeks and finally got my husband interested too (he loves sprouts). I'm excited to give it a go!

Do yourself a favor and do a 24 hour soak on any legumes and make sure you cook them well done. All legumes are poisonous to us and especially birds.

Careful with sweeping statements. String beans, snow peas, and sugar snap peas are all legumes and perfectly fine to eat fresh and raw. Dried beans are the concern with regards to danger.
