I've been making my husband a bowl of oatmeal in the mornings (he doesn't add anything to it, it is literally quick oats and water). Naturally, Kiwi wants to share and will eat about a spoonful of it if allowed. I can't see why oatmeal would be bad for him if he eats it regularly, but I wanted to be sure it's ok to let him eat about a spoonful a day of it?

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Oatmeal is VERY good for them.

I've known people who used it as a daily staple in the diet.

Interesting. Are oats a particularly healthy food for parrots for some reason? He does get whole oats in his beans+grains mix, but not a huge portion of his overall diet.

Well, it's low fat and some folks consider it a less expensive alternative to pellets. I've never gone that far, but none of mine ever refused to stick their face in a treat cup that had warm oatmeal in it. I feed it as a treat about once a week.

And it's also something I've used in the process gradually weaning hand fed parrots off formula and introducing them to new foods. Bent spoon on your lap method.

Does it have to be cooked or could you sprinkle in raw?

Zilla loves what I call her "oatmeal snacks" which means I cook it with water & cinnamon, raisins & dried cranberries, or apples (make it kind of thick) and then spread it in a pan and cool it down. The I cut into small squares she can hold and eat. She thinks she is getting something really good (meaning bad for her) but it's actually good for her!

That sounds like something Dexter would love. I might have to try this.

Illiger's Macaw (Loki)
Loki loves oatmeal...real oats tho, not instant (too much sugar). I also add a little sugar free almond butter to liven it up, a blue berry or two if he's been a good boy (which he is).

He gets this 1-2 times per week in the mornings. I think he favorite part is that I spoon feed it to him...

Thanks everyone. Those bars do sound like a yummy treat to make him:)

Just a FYI, what I mean by instant oats are the quick cook rolled oats from the bulk bins, not the quaker oat packet type oatmeal. They are rolled flat so they cook quicker than whole oats, but don't have any sugar in them unless you add it;)

ME! ME! Over here teacher!! Parker gets uncooked instant oats added to at lease half his meals. I just threw some into his very large batch of chop last night.
