Hi! I realize this may be a difficult question to answer but even a ballpark would be appreciated.

I'm getting an African Grey-headed Cape in the next week or so and I'd like to have things ready for her when she arrives. She will be my only bird at this time so I'm wondering just how big a bag of pellets I should be picking up for her being a medium sized bird? I guess more directly, how long would a 10lb bag last her? Is that too much food for this bird without it spoiling?

Hard to say how much she will eat. You can always buy a large bag and freeze the extra if she won't go through it fast enough.

Thanks for the suggestion Terry, I never considered that I could/should freeze the surplus if there is one! Looks like you and I are nearly neighbours as I'm in west edmonton. Glad to know you! I'll post some pics as soon as I can. She's a very sweet and beautiful bird!

If you order pellets direct from manufacturer or someplace with a large turn around, you can get a fresher bag that will last longer. Don't refrigerate as they can get moldy fast.

My 175 gram parrot eats primarily pellets and a 5 lb bag will last at least 3 months.

Pellets tend to have short dates so definitely watch that when buying and Piasa's advice on that is good. If you have 6 months shelf life and they been sitting there for 3.

Is it really, really OK freezing pellets, do they go soggy when you bring them out? Do they have to be used pronto? Considering this.

I have only had to freeze Harrison's, as we got a fantastic deal on a big bag and I have only one bird who will eat it. It thaws out just like it went into the freezer, we haven't had any issues with it getting mushy. I only remove what I need for each day.
