Hi All -

I'm going to have black beans and frozen corn for lunch today. I know that my flock can have frozen corn and I know I shouldn't feed them anything from a can but am wondering if I can give them a few of the black beans to go in the corn. I'm not going to load it up or anything. I'm just talking a few.

Had to look it up lol I was not sure

"Beans are a really good food for a lot of parrots,” said Jeffrey Jenkins, DVM, an avian veterinarian in Southern California. "They’re not high in calories, they have good quality proteins, and they don’t put a lot of weight on the bird.” He recommends cooked rather than sprouted beans, because sprouts can spoil easily. The beans can be cooked until they’re soft or mushy, and spiced with cayenne pepper or cumin, which parrots really like.

Legumes include all forms of beans—black beans, green beans, navy beans, kidney beans, etc.—along with lentils, peas, and chickpeas. Tofu is also a bean product that your parrot may enjoy.

If they are canned I would rinse them well, but I give them to my Zon every time I eat them. She loves them.

Thank you both!! Amanda are the canned beans already fully cooked. I imagine they are and I eat them all the time but don't usually give canned food of any sort to my flock.

Yes, the canned ones are already cooked. I always buy the organic no sodium ones. Since it's just me and 1 little Zon it doesn't make a lot of sense sometimes to cook them myself, unless I am making chop to freeze.

Amanda I made enough chop to last all 4 for 8 months and I put so many beans in there of course only the small beans and some kidney beans. No lima beans, quinoa, barley, all kinds of greens, including dandelion. I put every kind of veggie that I knew was good for them, no fruit at all and not a lot of filler. I filled a huge tote. It took 2 days to get all done and in small ziplock bags. Then I can add something new to it every day, like sprouts or cranberry, blueberry, etc... I just don't give them a lot of fruit at all and if I'm not feeling up to it one day there doesn't have to be anything added because really it's all in there. I honestly don't know what I was thinking when I though oh I'll just throw together a chop. haha I was doing the chop by the day before that.

I know Dr. Jenkins, a respected avian specialist in San Diego. My current and closer bird doc is a protege of Jenkins.

My flock enjoys black, kidney, garbanzo, lima, and pinto beans. Freshly cooked is best, and canned beans must be well rinsed to remove salt. Some cans are available with BPA-free linings, though many folks avoid any plastic materials.

Many of the goldenfeast blends I buy have black beans in 'em, though I haven't bothered much to soak or cook them.
