Last year was my first time to buy a pomegranate and it turned into a must have event because Venus my Ekkie loves it, and is an absolute pig with it. Buddy's my GCA, he's not a big fan, and Buzz, my CAG, I don't know if he's ever had any. Today I found them at HEB, a local grocer in Texas for $3.48 each (ouch). I bought one. I gave Venus half of it, gave Buddy a sliver, and Buzz less than a forth. Venus is busy removing the seeds from her's, Buddy, eh, and Buzz tasted it but hasn't gone to his bowl yet to try anymore.

If you are looking for a new treat high in a vitamin C that will keep your fids busy (if they like it), this is a good option.

Do you give Venus the whole half without taking the seeds out? The pretty chicken loves pomegranate too, but I took the seeds out for her because I wasn't sure if she should have the whole piece of fruit. I think it would be great to give her something to do, however

I gave her half since she hasn't had it in months. Last year was my first time to work with pomegranate. I had been reading of others on this group serving pomegranate so I bought one and then googled how to prepare one which was how to seed them. Well I had Venus on my shoulder when I started seeding one, put some seeds on a plate for her. Well she strolled past the plate to a quarter I hadn't touched and started seeding it and eating it. So now I give her a piece because she does all the work. She doesn't eat the membrane, she tosses it, just gets completely messy and it keeps her busy. Also I don't give it to her daily, 3 days at the soonest and when she sees it coming, look out! It's her absolute favorite treat.

I wouldn't feed the pretty chicken pomegranate every day either, especially with what they cost. However, the couple times I have gotten one, I usually quarter it. I get one quarter (the birds aren't the only ones who love them!), and she gets one quarter a day for 3 days, with whatever other fruit we have in the house. I am glad to hear that it should be okay to at least try giving her the whole quarter. If she does okay with it, it would be a good fruit to give her to forage when we're going to be gone so she has something different to do.

Pomegranates and blueberries are among my favorite fruits to give to the flock because of their nutritional content. Great stuff!

For everyday general eating, I tend to remove the separate out the skin and membrane and serve as small individual pieces in their chop. But serving in quarters makes for a great foraging food.

Either way, Jolly and Maya go crazy for it!

My birds LOVES pomegranate but they're not in season. Do not find them in local stores right now except during fall and winter season. While they're in season, I give them to all my birds daily.

I can't wait until I can find the again, almost every bird in our flock loves them. Sometimes during their season we can find them for .99 each and so we really stock up.

Actually, I bought some a few days ago. Perhaps they are being imported? That would explain the high prices.

Parkers the same way Tracey, and he got one just a week ago. We also discovered our local grocery store sells frozen pomegranate seeds too, double bonus!

It's also all about kiwis here. Great foraging food too! Serve half of one and Parker goes right to work shredding the flesh and digging into the green goodness.

I usually get mine from local vendors. I was surprised to see them at the grocer and couldn't resist getting one for the fids (OK Venus, lol). Once they are in season I can get them 5 for $5.

@ Taw5106 Thank you for so kindly bringing Pomegranates to the fore, gave Plum a 1/4 today on a kabob skewer and amazingly he has been 'wrecking it' - no sure how much eaten but so pleased he just went to explore. Never shown any interest previously. :)
