No but you can if you want to. I cheat and tend to buy mine as not always available. Plus I like to keep something that is 'new' for my fussy-pants because he tires of foods easily. What is your concern?

I try to give the best to my parrots. The problem is a hassle to do. So I wonder if Etais is important to sprout parrots . Currently I give vegetables , fruits, pellets , cooked cereals and legumes and dried seeds

I am one who thinks sprouts are essential. They are a power house of living food like no other. Food begins to lose nutrients the moment it is picked depending on a lot of factors, where was it grown, how far did it travel, temps in trucks and transport vehicles, how long it sat in a warehouse before being distributed to your local market and the list goes on.

To me a living food like sprouts are top of the list, then locally grown organic food is also best choice because you know it is fresh and didn't travel far, then organic foods transported from other areas or countries, which while not ideal are necessary if we want to enjoy some of the more exotic foods.

Juoo : I am sorry I have tried to give you the very best information and advice that I have but it seems that is not good enough so I will not reply to any more of your questions and will leave it to others :).

If my information given was bad do you not think that the moderators would have stepped in to correct it? I understand we have a slight language difficulty but I am left feeling irritated. I sincerely wish your birds the very best they deserve it and you owe it to them. Please do your own research also - I have provided you with some.

Extremely nutritious/beneficial/great addition to any diet? YES!

Required/necessary? Not at all.

I wouldn't even say "important". You always have options out there to create a well balanced diet. In the diet of animals who eat a diversity of food items, no one item makes or breaks the diet. They are a great addition to a human diet, but not at all "important" nor play a crucial specific role.

Get the opinion of your bird! My JoJo loves them, dead simple to make! Since I give her small quantities of seed mix, I sprout them. 12 hour soak, rinse twice a day, by day two they have small tails. I give them in a dish and let them dry out. The only biggie, Do Not Let Them Spoil!

How fun. This is an awesome idea. My Conure loves Safflower seed he goes nuts for them.

Is it ok to buy seed for wild birds and give it to your bird as a treat. I would like to buy a bag of Safflower seed and sprout them and feed some. It would be find right?

The "wild bird" seed isn't usually the highest quality, so I wouldn't recommend it, I also don't know if it's sterilized.

I use safflower seeds as training treats, and I buy them from Dr. Foster and Smith.

Drs. Foster & Smith Basic Seeds - Safflower

As for sprouts, my birds get them a few times a week, I try to start them at the beginning of the week, so 3 or so days later they're ready to feed. My little birds like them when they're just starting to sprout, whereas my other birds will eat them when they've got nice long tails and lots of green!

I buy bulk bags of sprouting mixes, and probably do about half a cup at a time.
