I've been using unsalted dry roasted peanuts as treats for the birds. When it's time to go back in their cages I give them one, then put 2 or 3 in the feed bowl. They go straight into the cages to get them.

Peanuts are high in Protein and can /does cause the development of Fatty Liver, and also development of heart problems! In either case, it is resulting in the early death of far to many Amazons and Too's

Please, go now, to the Amazons Forum and begin reading The 'I Love Amazons - ... Thread, ASAP! You will find within that Thread a Segment on a proper diet for most all Mid to Large Parrots!!!!

African Grey Timneh
My Timneh was getting un-shelled peanuts before coming home with me and those can have a mold on the inside that can be harmful. Especially in animal grade peanuts. I buy raw organic pine nuts and they seem expensive but a couple bucks worth goes a long way.

Also I think aflatoxins, aspergillosis, lots of things living in dirt come home with peanuts. The shells make a good place for them to hide.

I knew about the danger of in-the-shell peanuts.

I've also heard about dangers of the aspergillus fungus even on peanuts with no shell. I don't recall exactly where or how I've heard that. I wonder if that's really true, or if that possibility is super rare.

Fly free Plum, my gorgeous boy.
Nuts that your parrot may enjoy include; almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts (filberts), macadamias, pecans, pistachios and walnuts.

Feed all nuts in moderation as they are high in fat but they also can be an excellent source of nutrition ie; walnuts contain vitamin B6.
