I have been buying and freezing fresh stuff for his chop ingredients (this week we are adding zucchini squash) and I want to add some beans as well. I usually buy a lot of canned beans for chilis and stuff, so i was curious if that is bird safe. I would be getting organic canned, and salt free when possible.

I also have calcium d3 powder i use with my reptiles, if anyone knows if this is safe to add for birds, please chime in too!

thanks!

Sorry, that your Thread had gotten missed!

As a general statement; it depends! At the end of the day, its all about the ingredients, additives and as you noted the amount of some items, like salt and other preservatives. The amount of sugar added is yet another.

The canning process is well established and the system is highly automated and computer monitored. You are already targeting the quality of the food base that will be canned. The higher the quality of what you put in is in direct relationship to what comes out.

It is important to understand that everything in that can has been cooked and the common loss of nutritional value is the same for something that you cook at home. Its just part of the process.

Again, sorry your Thread got missed!

FYI: Calcium d3 powder can be used for your Parrots. Please understand that unless your Female is producing eggs it only is needed in very limited amounts, if at all.

I don't eat canned vegetables because fresh tastes much better, but one thing I do buy is the canned, organic, sodium free beans. It's just beans and water and it is more convenient than cooking them myself all the time. So if it's good enough for me and my family it's good enough for the bird. The Eden brand organic beans are also BPA free.

no worries, thanks for the responses :) I figured as much nutrition wise but thought it couldn't hurt to ask :)

Good to know about the calcium powder too! He gets outside time (although its quite short for the moment to end on good notes) so I wasn't super worried about the supplements being needed but again, never hurts to ask. I prefer to ask before I need to know haha
