I give herbs to my Alexandrine, never given chives though. I have read both that they are and are not safe for parrots! I probably wouldn't risk it.

Not chives. Onions (bulb plants in general, if you wan tot have a generalized takeaway lesson) can be toxic.

Fab cage set up, more like a full blown kids nursery with herb garden. Full points to carolflan, very envious, only thing I cannot see is a concrete type perch for keeping nails trimmed.

Awww thankyou very much I'm still learning apart from budgies I'm a first time parrot parent and I guess she is teaching me! I do have a concrete perch at the front of the cage although could probably use another one .

Love this idea!! I was thinking of interesting things to do at the bottom of shorty's cage. I got it a few weeks ago. I'm a new parrot parent too :)

How did the kitty grass go over? I've seen it and seriously through about doing just that for my galah. (Not sure the two ekkies would touch it)

I haven't tried it yet but i pluck some grass from the garden wash thoroughly and put in her cage a few time a week she loves messing about with it .

With the herbs, what are they potted in? If I get them from the local supermarket, they come in a mix that I don't trust...

Well that's just what I give my cockatoo the ones from supermarket she loves ripping them up and eating bits especially the live spinach & pakChoi one .she doesnt bother with the soil except to make a mess everywhere. .

Do you think if you covered the soil over in washed pea grit or even bird grit I suppose, would it be better?

Not knowing what is in the soil concerns me a bit.
