Switching from nutriberries to pellets?

Hello everyone,

New owner here with a couple of questions. My GCC was raised on fruits, veg,a special cockatiel/parakeet seed mix (low fat) and nutriberries. Nutriberries making up the majority of the diet.

I have kept it the same the past few days. I offer a fresh fruit/veg mix in the morning with a sprinkle of Avimix supplement. My first question is how necessary is this avimix? The breeder says she gives a small pinch daily to ensure they get all the vitamins, etc. they need. But if they have a good diet surely this isn't needed, or needed daily?

secondly, I see conflicting things about nutriberries as a main diet. The breeder said it's better than even the best pellets and that her avian vet said a mix of that with special low fat seed mixes are better for the bird. If this is true why do so many people use pellets? Is it just because pellets are cheaper? Cost isn't a problem where Tiki's health is concerned.

I'm looking at making my first batch of chop tonight as well and freezing it so I can give that in the mornings and at night. My plan is chop for breakfast, leave seed/nutriberries in whilst I'm at work. Then more chop for dinner when I'm home, with treats and nutriberries being used as training rewards.

Any thoughts on these points would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, as always!

I will explain what I do for my 'too. He has weight and health issues, again happy to pay for the best possible for him.

I feed a couple of Nutriberries a day because he likes them, satisfies his seed craving if you like. They helped to convert him to TOPs organics pellets which I give daily, a bit like you give Avimix. It hopefully covers any dietary holes. I am having to restrict him a lot.

If you can prep and feed a varied and balanced diet then there is no need because you are doing it all. If you can't for whatever reason or your bird is fussy then that is where problems can occur.

Take the Nutriberry feeding guidelines lightly. I personally wouldn't feed these and seed.

Avimix - Too much dietary assistance is as bad as too little.

This is such a good point to be made. think of those humans who are constantly popping some sort of "heallth" pill into themselves. They become 100% dependent on them causing some serious issues if they stop.

Like Plum said, as varied and healthy a diet as possible with some bits of "junk" food here and there. IMO junk does consist as part of a healthy diet but for psychological reasons rather than for your body. I mean it's called comfort food for a reason
