How Long Does a 3.5 lb Bag of Zupreem Last for A Gray

Wade - TAG
So I'm getting a TAG soon (baby, fully fledged and weaned), my first bird I've owned, and the food he's being weaned off onto is Zupreem. After he's had about 3 months in the new home and settled in, I'd like to start changing him over to Harrisons or RB since it's a bit healthier. Right now I have an employee discount at the parrot store I work at, and I'd like to get enough Zupreem to last that time + some extra without having a ton left over.

So current TAG owners, about how long does it take for your bird to go through a single bag of 3.5 lb Zupreem?

Also, I know every bird is different, but does anyone have suggestions for good treats for TAGs?

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Congratulations for adopting a TAG! Beautiful and underrated little Greys!

How long the bag lasts depends on his habits and overall diet. Some birds are notorious dumpers of pellets, others grind a fair amount just for fun! I'd guess about 3 weeks to one month, based on receiving fresh vegetables and fruits a number of days each week.

I understand your desire to wait a few months before transitioning to a better food. FWIW, I switched my entire flock to Harrison's over a 3 week period, precisely following their guidance. Worked well, they all enjoy without exception.

Sunny a female B&G macaw;
Japie (m) & Appie (f), both are congo african grey;
All are rescues- had to leave their previous homes for 'reasons', are still in contact with them :)
Just dump the Zupreem ;)
(I am no fan - they are mostly sugar imho not real food)
Just start mixing the new pellets in with them, big chance they still will eat 'the sweets' first but once they are finished... less sweets,. more real food every day.
(most pellets have instructions on/inside the box how to get the parrots to switch safely)

about the treats: they will let you know, trust me.
Mine were all vastly different in their preferences (I have taken care of 5 CAGs sofar)
The one thing to look out for is fatty stuf: peanuts are off the menu unless there is no other option ( meds in peanutbutter usually work great)
Appie even considers ordinairy pellets 'treats' if they are offered as such ;) she just thinks the attention is reward enough...
But fruits/vegs are treats, so are pinenuts/ nuts in general (just watch the latter for calories/fatcontent).

When you buy, buy so that you can store dry Parrot Food in the Freezer. Once you get your Parrot switched over to your food of choice, target buying in lots that will allow you to have your most receipt purchase in the Freezer for four weeks (some will state shorter and others will state longer). This will assure that any 'bug' eggs in the packaging is Freeze Killed prior to use.

We package in one week bags and date mark them. Pull out of Freezer a couple of days prior to use and refrigerate while using for maximum freshness. Some will consider this 'over-kill' but it has kept us bug free.

FYI #1: Most Pellets are bug free, but the process above just assure that remains a reality.
FYI #2: Take the time to assure that you're providing your TAG with a wide spectrum diet which includes Pellets, but is not based solely on Pellets. Fresh Natural Foods should form the foundation of your Parrots diet. NOTE: Each Parrot Species has variations of what that diet should include, ask TAG members regarding those variations for a TAG.

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
It depends on how often you dump and change the food contents of a bowl (and how much you put in). I personally feel the need to dump out my Zupreem/seed/Roudybush mix almost daily, eaten or not..
Bacteria and mold concern me, so I don't like the idea of letting it sit for too long.

Thank you guys for the advice!

I will also be giving my bird a fresh food simmer + soak in the mornings, not just the pellets but it's good to know that I can start a food transition earlier then I was expecting. I'll get two bags then to be safe and start the transition once he's settled in and once I've made sure there's no major weight drop.

Good input!

Here's some information on Harrison's.
Harrison's Bird Foods
I feed Harrison's, supplemented by fresh healthy treats. My first, and later, my current avian vet recommended it. My bird loves the pellets now, but to get him converted, my avian vet suggested putting pellets out all day, and putting seeds (his old diet) out for two 15-minute periods a day. That would sustain him but leave him hungry enough to try new stuff. I presume the same technique could be used to get him to eat other healthy stuff, like fruits and vegetables! My guy was eating pellets in a couple of days, and now I can feed a good variety of other stuff, knowing he has the pellets as a basic. Pellets are out all day... fresh treats a few times a day. I also like Harrison's via mail because I never have to worry about out-of-date products.
