Are dried chiles from the Mexican section of the grocery store ok for Quaker parrots? Or do they have to be fresh? :gcc:

The seed mix I give my birds contains dried (red) chilli peppers.
One of my birds loves to eat them.
the other just uses them to scratch himself.

I can't say for certain how the chilli peppers are grown that are sold in the store bit I think they would be ok.

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
I hope you get a reply, because I have always wondered this as well. The only issue I can think of would be the use of pesticides in foreign countries----I often buy giant bags of peppers from China for myself, but I have read that the regulations can differ from country-to-country and that could potentially be problematic for a bird (or even for a human).....Honestly though, I don't know.

The Rb eats them all the time, and has for all his life. You can rehydrate them if you're in th mood for a mess, but xdry is fine. Make sure lot of fresh water is available. I heard of one bird who got a little constipoopiated. lol
And while we're on the subject of chiles.

Peppers are a great source of vitamins AND they're easy to offer.
Common wisdom is that parrots have such poor taste and smell that hot peppers really excite and stimulate them. And they're very healthy (lots of good green and great nutrients)! So I give the Rickeybird lots! The only downside... when he eats a pepper, then preens, then wants to cudddle, it's a very incendiary experience.
I buy several kinds...
Poblanos, to stuff the end between the bars tightly (above a perch) so the Rbird can nibble at his leisure.
Jalapenos and Serranos, to toss into the cage's snack-bowl, to trick him into entering so I can shut the door. There's no such thing as a chile that isn't good for them. If he absolutely does NOT want to go back into his cage, a big fat Anaheim will always do the trick.
I posted a video of the bird eating one in the thread about beak flavors, and you can hear me sneezing!

Levi loves hot peppers & he eats them all the time.
He also eats them all ways, cut up in meals, chop, fresh whole & dried in seed mixes. :)

Based on my experience only, soft dairy products like yogurt, sour cream or cottage cheese applied to the lips are an easily-applied
antedote for capsaicin burns.

Have you looked in the spice section of your grocery store? Please make sure the only ingredients are Chili Peppers.

Another option is a local pizza restaurant although these may have additional salt.
