I just had a lightbulb moment! I have been wanting to make trays of wheat grass for my little guy, so I picked up a bag of organic planting soil! But I have been weary of starting this, because of the concern of mold! As we all know, Chia seeds are so easy to grow, you can grow them on a rock!
Me thinks this should be a winner!

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
I have plants in my home..I don't feed them to the bird though. Are you worried about mold in the soil or on the plant?

To take it so far as the plant, Iā€™m not sure. Itā€™s a Salvia, which is a mint relative, but Salvia as edible can be hit or miss.

But as a sprout? Absolutely! Just soak for 4 hours and serve. Note they are mucilagenous, so when you soak them, they release a mucus type coating - not something people are used to seeing. This coating is not harmful.

Good point about the possible toxicity! As far as the mucus coating I learned about that the hard way! I live about five minutes away from work and I grabed a big handful and threw it in my mouth and started chewing it! By the time I got to work my teeth were completely coated I couldnā€™t get it out of my lips, it was interesting walking in!

I am so sorry I didnā€™t reply to this question! Mold in the soil is my concern! Not sure if I am acting like an over protective parent who does not want their child into a playground where there are other children! Or if this is a valid concern!

I have 2 sweet budgies, Nimbus and Banana. They are both boys Nimbus is 17 months and Banana is 11 years old though I've only had him for about 3 weeks. would write more but that's the max
chia seeds are perfectly safe for sprouts but im not sure about chia plants. I heard if you put a piece of terracotta in water so just the bottom is in the water and them you put chia seeds on the top. terracotta absorbs moisture but not enough for it to release its mucus stuff allowing the chia seeds to sprout.
