Frozen food

I was wondering if I got a bad of mixed frozen vege or even small bags of certain frozen fruits, would be a little cheaper, defrost a little at a time to give to Giggles. My lil Red Crowned Karkarki. I know it is important in their diet and we can't always afford fresh.

Last year I ended up needing emergency spinal surgery which left me with a spinal injury so my husband and I live only on the one income. I was a Nanny and lost my job as I was unable to work for months. So money at times can get a bit tight.

I'm sorry to hear about your spinal injury, I'm glad you have Giggles to keep you company and make you laugh.

Fresh is always best but Giggles only needs small portions so when you don't have the fresh stuff I think frozen would be a great alternative. Make sure you check the ingredient list and avoid those with extra preservatives and added sugar. You could also prepare a batch of chop and freeze it in small portions for Giggles.

This recipe was designed for Amazons and Macaws but it has a nice ingredient list and you could reduce the amount to fit Giggle's menu.

Some advocate the use of frozen veggies in lieu of canned when fresh is not available for reasons of freshness (at time of packing) and limited salt immersion. I thoroughly rinse frozen veggies in a colander or strainer before use.

Thank you. The injury has improved. a condition called Cauda Equina Syndrome. Which is basically when nerves of base of spine are damaged. I have good mobility got most mobility back. Around the house. Energy is limited, hence a bird and not a dog, plus I can care for all of Giggles needs myself including changing water/food and cleaning cage, well the only thing I can't do is clean up her poop from high places. Walking stick when I am outside, wheelchair for very long distance. But it going good. I limp a bit because my legs are weaker and heavier to lift. But anything I cannot do my husband steps up. Other day I posted how I walked with her while she was eating my husband helped me balance so I wouldn't stumble and frighten her. She only comes out of cage when hubby is home because I can't catch her myself. Being short (as my husband says midget size) doesn't help..
But that is one reason I am trying my best to keep patient. Because I would love to sit and watch movies with her. And have her join me when I do things around the house..

I have read so much about food for Giggles and so much info, every time I think of giving her something new I look up in case she shouldn't eat it. She is my first bird (not including the chickens that eat everything) So I want to keep her happy and healthy. Once she is tame we going to build her a little Perch with food and water bowl and a little bridge and play/climby things.

Think I kinda highjacked my own post. Sorry I kind of have a habit of rambling on about things when I type

i dont know about the food but fresh is always better i hope you will get better glad you have giggles

I have used frozen veggies before. I'd open the bag and pour the ingredience into one of those zipper type freezer bags and just take out what was needed at the moment and heat in the microwave. (My birds like their food warm ) but always made sure the food wasn't HOT when serving.Corn niblets,sweet peas,brocoli,carrots etc worked well.

Salty has been living on frzen chop for years. last bath lasted 4 months, frozen 1 serving ata time ans zppped for dinner.

I use frozen veggies here and there, like peas, or cubed butternut squash, or sweet potato, I give it s quick warm up in my cast iron. Glad you have mobility. Sorry to hear of spinal issues. I too have to use mobility device's. Darn birds chewed my walker padding, looks like rats got to it. They are so sneaky! Sounds like your bird is a joy. I use one of those closet grate shelf's, attached to the wall vertical, then I can attach perches and rope, a toy, it's a cheap way to make a play area right by your chair. And I use fishing line attached to a screw in the ceiling and hang a hoop down to eye level for them, my birds live them, and that way no floor space is taken up. I love reading your progress!

I've had much better luck convincing my GCC to eat frozen veggies (those bags of corn or peas) than anything else so far. Since it's that or an all-pellet-and-treat diet, frozen it is!

laurasea my husbands rabbit got to my walker. They are like goats and will try and eat anything. Looks likes rats started to eat the wheels.

Good for you, for being so vigilant, even in the face of dealing with your own medical issues. Great input above.
You make me think of myself... I was in the hospital with pneumonia recently, and all I could think of was whether or not the Rb was getting his stuff! We're just a couple of parronts, right? Right.
