Foods they like and ShouldN't Eat...

Nobody is surprised when their bird wants bread or pancakes, etc. Even pizza - these are all grain-based. We know birds like grains. They probably shouldN't eat them, or at least not too much, but it makes sense. Right?

But who else's birdie is just Ridiculous?

Foods she Loves, will go crazy for, which are NOwhere on the bird-approved list, and Definitiely Not Good for her:

Cheese. Deli-style sliced American-cheese from Market Basket. Other types of cheese? Nah. But any time I open the fridge she is there looking to see if I'm gonna reach for that yellow cheese. She takes a few seed-sized bites... most of which goes down my shirt... and then she's good. But she's gotta have those bites!!

Mayonnaise. What is up with this? IF I have anything with mayonnaise and she can somehow get to it, she will be right there, licking at it. Really? Mayonnaise?

Turkey. TURKEY. Granted, it's very GOOD turkey meat, from Raymond turkey farm. I get the pre-cooked chunks-by-lb. They raise the turkeys there, etc etc. So, yeah birdie, IF you're gonna eat turkey it's probably the only I'd feel slightly okay with. But Darling, you are NOT supposed to be carnivore!!

And, in this case I'm Not talking just a few little nibbles of seed-sized bits. She reaches for the largest chunk she sees before pulling off beak-able bites. Which she then actually EATS. (That is, I do Not wind up with a shirt-full of turkey meat.)

In case you're wondering, how she came to try eating turkey in the first place: Well, along with the plain meat, and various other options ie turk-pies, turk-chili, etc., Raymond's also sells prepared turkey salad. (Very plain - turkey meat, celery, and mayo only.) So recently, for the first time since I've had her, I got some turkey meat AND a container of turkey salad. I went to eat the salad, and her eyes lit up. She got herself right over to my plate, and I assumed she was just gonna take a lick or two of mayo. Nuh-uh. She might've come for the mayo, but she definitely stayed for the turkey!

Salty will eat a chicken bone once in awhile, most of the meat off, and he loves the marrow. Most parrots are opportunistic feeders to a certain extent, and eat bugs in the wild. Like anything not strictly OK for them a very small amount occasionally is not going to do them much harm. The cheese tho? Hmmm they have no micro-organisms to break dairy down; I would become a closet cheese eater.

and yeah, he loves pizza and gets a small piece of crust. When he sees the big flat box, he goes into search and destroy mode.

Cheese. Any cheese.

This is my prime training treat when we are either 1) starting a new trick, 2) overcoming fear, or 3) get pst a stick point in training.

Like Al's Saltyboy..Amy loves chicken bone's too. I like chicken also,so if I get any for a quick meal.I'll go to the local Popeye's and get a "combo meal". A breast and two drummy's :04: The stick is of perfect size for Amy. I'll cut "most" of the meat off the bone ( I give that meat to Davids gert (cat) even though that @#$%^) always hisses at me and the side dish is either a mini corn cob (which Amy also likes) or bowl of rice and beans ( he's not too fond but will eat) Yes he'll eat pizza ( I don't get that often) I give a small bit that I leave the cheese,and a piece of meat ( either sausage or pepperoni ) and with peppers,NO onion of course!
Sometimes on a Sunday morning I'll order from a restuarant three minutes away brekky for David and I. I get an omlet..ham or sausage with cheese with peppers (again no onions) and David will get a short stack of 'cakes or French toasts,usually with 'taters. When I get back Amy is usually on his X perch right at my computer waiting for me. He'll again get very SMALL portions. A 'tater..small piece of 'cake ( no syrup of course) egg with pepper and small piece of ham or sausage,and a tiny piece of toast,just big enough to squirt his medication onto. But this is always in moderation! Does NOT get this everyday!!! Once a month maybe. He DOES get a small piece of toast or english muff every morning with a dab of almond butter and his 'nana flavored heart med.
Years ago,my mom ( r.i.p. mom) in the evening while watch tv,would have a bowl of vanilla ice cream ( Breyers..the best IMO no preservatives added) and when she was done there would be a small pool of melted ice cream in the bottom of the bowl. She's put the bowl on top of Amy's house and that crazy bird would lap that stuff up,just like a doggo would. But that didn't happen often and today Amy has no interest in it

I admit that I am getting really devious. Syd's to die for list possibly literally if he had his way. Cheese, cornflakes, Nutty cluster cereal, Elderflower juice, Icecream, Yoghurt, Butter, Honey, Bread/toast, Strawberry jam, Marmalade, Cake every kind, Pancakes, pastry. The list seems to increase each week until now I prepare my meals with him in his cage. He then starts a low screech with rises to a crescendo with each minute that he doesn't get a bit. I now put something suitable on my plate early on in the preparations I then make a great show of cutting and blowing it cool enough for him. The minute he has it he is happy and my life and eardrums return to normal.

I'm dreading the day when he realises that he isn't having the same as me!
